Michael Trimble and Bettina Schmitz have assembled an international team of experts to review the most recent findings and explore the interface between epilepsy and behavior disorders. The authors discuss the classifications available and examine how adequate they are for defining the subtleties of behavioral changes in patients with neurological disorders. Coverage is broad-ranging, from related cognitive problems, biological underpinnings, and pseudoseizures, to clinical aspects and treatment issues. This timely book covers the practical implications of ongoing research, and offers both a diagnostic and management perspective.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"This book gives up-to-date reviews with extensive references for further insight and to new developments in classification, basic and clinical research. It illustrates the broad scope of modern neuropsychiatry and the close connection between psychiatry and neurology. This book is certainly warranted." Raben Rosenberg, Psychiatric Hospital in Aarhus, Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica

"The book is important...[It] can be recommended to all those treating children and adolescents with epilepsy. It emphasizes the role of the neuropsychiatrist in the multidisciplinary epilepsy team. Further, it points to the need for a book on the neuropsychiatry of epilepsy in children as well." Ingrid Olsson, Journal of the European Society for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry

"Extremely well written and edited, the production of the book is well above average. Congratulations to the editors and the authors for providing a state of the art picture of a complex topic like epilepsy. This book should be on the bookshelf of every clinician whether they deal directly with epilepsy or not." International Review of Psychiatry

"The editors did an excellent job in putting together such a broad and complex topic for clinicians treating epilepsy patients...a must for all neurologists, psychiatrists, and neuropsychiatrists involved in treating epileptic patients and their behavioral disorders." Doody's Electronic Journal

"I find [this book] a valuable resource and reference book on a topic for which there are few sources of similarly well-organized, up-to-date information and recommend it." Annals of Neurology

"This book is very well written ... This book should be part of the library of all neurologists, psychiatrists, and health professionals interested in the psychiatric aspects of epilepsy." Neurology

"The book is written in a plain, easy-to-read style. It is bound in an attractive soft cover. For the amount of information the text provides, it is a bargain." Canadian Journal of Psychiatry

5.0 out of 5 stars Neuropsychiatry of Epilepsy Explained by the Experts, August 6, 2006
I am neither a neurologist nor am I a psychiatrist. I do have a personal interest in epilepsy. I did not read the entire book.

I found the chapters pertaining to my personal interests to be outstanding. This book did not put me to sleep. The writing was very good. The descriptions of the various epilepsy related psychiatric syndromes were very enlightening and I was immediately able to recognize the patterns in an individual I know who has epilepsy.

Chapters that I read covered such topics as Epilepsy and Learning Disorders, Subtle Effects of Epilepsy, Agression and Epilepsy, Epilepsy and Suicide, Postictal Psychosis, Dementia and Epilepsy, Risk of Cognitive Decline, Effects of Antiepileptic Drugs on Behavior, Effects of Drugs on Cognitive Function. There were other chapters that I am sure will be of interest to others.

I recommend this book. I came away with a broad understanding of the issues, having gone into it not fully appreciating what is known and what can be done about the psychiatric conditions that can be associated with epilepsy.
