Book Description

January 15, 1996 019509073X 978-0195090734 2
A 1996 survey of the members of the American Board of Professional Psychology Diplomates, published by The Clinical Neuropsychologist journal, selected the first edition of this book as one of the "Essential Books and Journals in North American Clinical Neuropsychology"--a list which included only 10 other titles! The Second Edition has improved further on this high standard. While the authors have retained the same general structure--with the addition of a set of three chapters on psychosocial outcomes--virtually the entire book has been rewritten and thoroughly updated to reflect recent developments in this area of knowledge. Part I features new chapters on the Iowa-Benton approach, on cognitive screening methods, and on computers and memory. Part II has been expanded with new chapters on Tourette's syndrome, acute and chronic hypoxemia, HIV infection, schizophrenia, Huntington's disease, and an expanded chapter on Parkinson's disease. Part III is entirely new, and it focuses on life quality outcome in head injury and pulmonary disease. Considerably enlarged in size, this book will remain the basic reference on the neuropsychological aspects of diseases affecting brain and behavior.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"In this large field of contenders for readership, this volume is a welcome contribution to the literature....The book deserves praise for tackling the difficult topic of quality of like....The important volume will serve both advanced students and clinicians alike for many years to come."--Journal of Psychiatry and Neuroscience

Praise for the first edition:

"One of the best of a number of textbooks in recent years on clinical neuropsychiatry....All the chapters are clearly written, thorough, and current and include outstanding bibliographies....This book would be a welcome addition to the library of any neurologist or psychiatrist."--The New England Journal of Medicine

"This volume deserves a prominent position in the growing collection of works in clinical neuropsychology. Twenty chapters, authored for the most part by well-known neuropsychologists, provide a sound summary of current knowledge about neuropsychological testing in the major neuropsychiatric disorders....A welcome updating of knowledge in critical areas."--Contemporary Psychology

"Ambitious and important...Dr. Grant, a prominent neuropsychiatrist, and Dr. Adams, a leading neuropsychologist, have assembled an impressive set of contributors for the volume....Fills a need and is likely to become a standard reference."--American Journal of Psychiatry

"The quality, usefulness, and currency of this book are outstanding; it is sure to be a classic in neuropsychology. The salience of the information it covers has grown substantially since publication of the first edition some 10 years ago. The book should be a must for academic libraries and on the short list for clinicians' personal reference. 4 Stars!"--Doody's Health Sciences Book Review Journal

"The second edition of Neuropsychological Assessment is an outstanding resource for the field of clinical neuropsychology....It is thorough and well edited and will doubtless maintain its place among the most widely referenced and consulted works in our field."--Journal of Clinical and Experimental Neuropsychology

This is a tremendous collection of studies as put together by Grant and Adams. It is the best I have seen and is a cornerstone in neuropsychology assessment. The sheer amount of information and detailed descriptions are relatively easy to follow along with varying degrees of diverse opinions. If someone knows of a better book, please contact me.
