Book Description

March 30, 2000
One of the largest patient populations seen by neuropsychologists are older adults suffering from problems associated with aging. Further, the proportion of the population aged 65 and above is rising rapidly. This book provides a guide to neuropsychological clinicians increasingly called upon to assess this population. The book details in a step-by-step fashion the phases and considerations in performing a neuropsychological assessment of an older patient. It covers procedural details including review of patient's medical records, clinical interview, formal testing, interpretation of test scores, addressing referral questions, and preparing an evaluation report.

Key Features
* Outlines a clear, logical approach to neuropsychological evaluation
* Provides specific clinical practice guidelines for each phase of the evaluation
* Integrates clinical practice with up-to-date research findings
* Recommends specific tests for evaluating older adults
* Details how to interpret test findings and identify the patient's neuropsychological profile
* Illustrates important points with examples and case materials, many neuropathologically-confirmed
* Includes forms useful in clinical practice

Editorial Reviews

Review

"This book gives comprehensive and thorough up to date coverage of this topic... The author is to be congratulated on producing a book which travels well outside the North American context in which it was written... The book is soundly based in current research and theory... but at the same time conveys a strong sense of clinical experience and wisdom. The reader will not find here a defence of the contribution of of neuropsychology to the management of cognitive disorders in older people, but a better account of the state of the art would be difficult to imagine."
--JOURNAL OF NEUROLOGY, NEUROSURGERY, AND PSYCHIATRY

From the Back Cover

Dementia affects up to a quarter of the world's population. Given the growing proportion of the population over age 65, dementia will continue to be a major public health concern. Cost-effective detection and treatment of dementing illnesses will increasingly challenge clinical practice.
Neuropsychological Evaluation of the Older Adult: A Clinician's Guidebook presents a framework for assessing whether an individual has experienced abnormal cognitive change. The book's framework follows a logical sequence, beginning with the clinical interview, moving through formal testing, identification of the patient's neuropsychological profile, preparing the evaluation report, planning feedback and follow-up services. Specific clinical guidelines and suggestions are included, addressing issues such as ensuring patient cooperation, testing efficiency, and successfully managing complex patient-family interactions. Readers will also find technical information, including principles of test design and profiles of the major neurobehavioral disorders affecting older adults.
This book will be a valuable and frequently used tool for professionals evaluating older adults, including: neuropsychologists, physicians, nurses, and social workers. The guidebook will also be useful to graduate students in clinical and neuropsychology.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource, February 4, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Neuropsychological Evaluation of the Older Adult: A Clinician's Guidebook (Hardcover)
Excellent resource for any clinician involved in assessment of cognitive abilities of elderly patients. Very nicely complements neuropsychological research findings by focusing on application of scientific knowledge to the individual case. Nicely balanced presentation with very useful practical tips and guidelines for gero-neuropsychological assessment. I have worked with geropsychiatric populations for about 7 years and would highly recommend this book to any beginning or experienced practitioner working in this area.
