Create Unique Melodies with Five Multicolored Blocks

Neurosmith Music Blocks feature five multicolored blocks for children to play with and use to shape their own musical creations. The blocks fit into their display in a row and are held securely in place with magnets. When children press down on the blocks, each block will play a phrase of music. Each side of each block plays a different phrase, and children are encouraged to turn the blocks both to hear different phrasings and to see the different visual shapes on every side.

Play Phrasings in Three Different Styles

Once they've decided which musical phrasing they like for each block, children can press the red button on the front of the display, and the blocks will play one after another from left to right to showcase the new composition. Children can follow along as each block lights up while it plays, and rearrange for new creations.

In addition, a switch on the back of the display allows children to play the blocks in three different musical styles: Jumpin' Jive Jazz, African Rhythms, and Mozart's Night Music. These styles provide a range of rhythms and melodies to inspire a child's creativity.

Develop Play Patterns to Shape Cognitive Development

As children arrange and rearrange the blocks to make compositions, they develop a series of playtime actions called "play patterns." Beware. There are several versions of this product. The description on Amazon is misleading. The new version of the music blocks, which most amazon sellers will be carrying, has Mozart, jazz, and world music hardware for your music selection. It is NOT compatible with any of the cartridges to select alternative music selections. The product description is not correct. If you want this option, you need to find a seller of the older model or be prepared to do a lot of returns of models and cartridges. If you are happy with the three music selection in the built in hardware, the product has won several toy awards and I am sure is wonderful. The new model I have I will say is not digital CD quality, however. It is equitable to most children toys, so a little disappointed as I expected a toy focused on music would have better quality.

I bought this toy a while ago for my then 1.5-year-old. A friend of mine had an early version of the music blocks for her daughter and I wanted my boy to have a similar toy. Well, the early version was not available, so I bought the newer lighter version. The first dissatisfaction came from realization that it didn't support changing cartridges - which was absolutely not clear from the product description. OK, we got stuck with three rhythms only. Second, the toy stopped working properly after four months - it just started playing random pieces if any. My boy was very sad about this - he couldn't understand why one of his favorite toys was not working. I got the package directly from Small World Toys, so, I contacted them several times for replacement. All my efforts have been fruitless - they continued telling me that they were very busy and not sure what to do because the toy got broken after 90 days from purchase. Finally, I ended up with signing off this version of the Music Blocks and purchasing the early one (the one the friend of mine had) from eBay - after two years it still works perfectly! And I don't have to deal with Small World Toys again.

Our twin girls have loved this toy since they first heard it. It has been a source of simple blocks, a way to make sounds, and - later - a way to investigate music. We have found that other toys have occupied them for periods of time, but this one they have played with every day for a year. As a apernt, I also like the way it encourges exploration and learning. The listed description does not due this product justice! It's better than many of the popular toys were told to get. For example, the Mozart music option plays no matter where the blocks are and in any position, Rotate or move a block and you still get music. Other options play "best" or "right" with the blocks in the correct position (that matches the light spectrum, incidentally) and other sonds requie each block rotated to the same figure AND in the correct order. yet it always makes sounds and the kids love it, from classical to jazz to rhythms of the world.
