5.0 out of 5 stars Our Favorite Toy for an Entire Year!
Our twin girls have loved this toy since they first heard it. It has been a source of simple blocks, a way to make sounds, and - later - a way to investigate music. We have found that other toys have occupied them for periods of time, but this one they have played with every day for a year. As a apernt, I also like the way it encourges exploration and learning. Beware. There are several versions of this product. The description on Amazon is misleading. The new version of the music blocks, which most amazon sellers will be carrying, has Mozart, jazz, and world music hardware for your music selection. It is NOT compatible with any of the cartridges to select alternative music selections. The product description is not correct. If you want this option, you need to find a seller of the older model or be prepared to do a lot of returns of models and cartridges. If you are happy with the three music selection in the built in hardware, the product has won several toy awards and I am sure is wonderful. The new model I have I will say is not digital CD quality, however. It is equitable to most children toys, so a little disappointed as I expected a toy focused on music would have better quality.

2.0 out of 5 stars Nice toy but the quality and customer service killed the value, March 1, 2009

I bought this toy a while ago for my then 1.5-year-old. A friend of mine had an early version of the music blocks for her daughter and I wanted my boy to have a similar toy. Well, the early version was not available, so I bought the newer lighter version. The first dissatisfaction came from realization that it didn't support changing cartridges - which was absolutely not clear from the product description. OK, we got stuck with three rhythms only. Second, the toy stopped working properly after four months - it just started playing random pieces if any. My boy was very sad about this - he couldn't understand why one of his favorite toys was not working. I got the package directly from Small World Toys, so, I contacted them several times for replacement. All my efforts have been fruitless - they continued telling me that they were very busy and not sure what to do because the toy got broken after 90 days from purchase. Finally, I ended up with signing off this version of the Music Blocks and purchasing the early one (the one the friend of mine had) from eBay - after two years it still works perfectly! And I don't have to deal with Small World Toys again.

The listed description does not due this product justice! It's better than many of the popular toys were told to get. For example, the Mozart music option plays no matter where the blocks are and in any position, Rotate or move a block and you still get music. Other options play "best" or "right" with the blocks in the correct position (that matches the light spectrum, incidentally) and other sonds requie each block rotated to the same figure AND in the correct order. yet it always makes sounds and the kids love it, from classical to jazz to rhythms of the world.

This is our default gift toy for 1 year olds... We received it when our son was 1 and he loves it, but not as much as my wife and I. We would just all sit down and arrange the blocks to make music with different instruments. It's a lot of fun. This really allows the child to use their imagination. Excellent toy.

We borrowed the old version of the toy from a neighbor and my daughter (and her parents) liked it so much, we decided to order our own. The new version is not nearly as good as the old. It is more the quality of the sound that bothers me than the lack of cassettes. The sound quality is terrible. Also, I like the Mozart night music but the jazz and African music is not as good in my opinion. I wouldn't have ordered this had I known how different it was from the old version of the toy that we liked so much. The idea of the toy is so fun though. Just wish they could improve the model.

This is a wonderful toy. It is a little advanced for my 15 month old, but he enjoys putting the blocks in place. He "broke" one of the blocks almost immediately, by throwing it - it doesn't always play when pressed and has a small piece rattling around inside of it. Other than that I think it is something he can grow with and learn to use "properly" over time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous toy!, April 9, 2010

This marvelous toy creates beautiful music and challenges a child of many ages. A younger toddler simply puts the blocks in to make a musical sound. An older child can follow the simple instructions to create a symphony. Great toy for adult-child to play together. Wonderful for the car other small spaces.

I gave this musical toy to my grandson for Christmas. It seems whenever I'm talking to my daughter on the phone, he is playing with his musical blocks. I highly recommend to educational and fun toy - probably best for young children 9 months to 3 1/2 years old.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my all-time favorite toys., December 13, 2011

I've been buying toys for my kids for 23 years and this is one of my all-time favorites. All of my kids loved it. My one-year-old loves placing the blocks on it any way just to hear the songs, and my middle kids (ages 5 and 9) enjoy trying to figure out the order of the blocks to play each of the six songs. After reading the other reviews, I thought I'd point out that ours is close to nine years old so we probably have the older version.

This review is from: Neurosmith Music Blocks (Toy)
This has been my children's favorite toy since they were about 1 year old. It goes from just a music toy to something they can use to change tone and pattern of the song. The music that comes out is soothing. It doesn't sound like a toy. I love that you can buy other cartidges to change the songs so you don't have to listen to the same one over and over again. The only downfall is that my children would often lose the blocks and then the toy would not work right.
