5.0 out of 5 stars Bedroom farce for the late 90s
As the title suggests, this novel explores the oft-interrelated themes of neurosis and sex -- and does so quite hilariously. The plot moves at warp speed, with bizarre twists that somehow work and many bust-a-gut-laughing, priceless scenes. The author has a nice ear for the psychological quirks this is not a book for the prissy or squeamish. There are explicit sex...

This book was very enjoyable. I thought it was very funny, in a Sex and The City kind of graphic way. The ending was very unfulfilling, almost as if Margolis didn't know where to go with the story, so she just wrapped everything up very fast. Still, I liked this book a lot and would recommend it to anyone who is a fan of Isabel Wolff, Marian Keyes, and of course, Bridget...

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Naughty Fun, October 3, 2000

Spicy and hilarious are two words I use when I describe this book to my friends. I picked it up as an impulse buy and was not disappointed. The story of this real woman and her completely messed-up personal life (an OCD mother and a hypochondriac husband, not to mention her quirky friend...) grabs you as a reader and makes you want more. This is the reason it loses a star, I wanted more at the end. The rest of the book was so great that the end was anticlimactic (I'm not giving anything away, don't worry). It was wonderful to see a strong woman in the driver's seat, both sexually and in the day-to-day. Margolis goes into heart-racing detail that will make you forget where you are because you just want to see what's next. "Neurotica" is definitely a book worth reading.

The plot moves at warp speed, with bizarre twists that somehow work and many bust-a-gut-laughing, priceless scenes. The author has a nice ear for the psychological quirks this is not a book for the prissy or squeamish. There are explicit sex scenes (if you find words like clitoris unromantic, you won't like them) and the dialogue is full of expletives, body parts, and language not fit for those under age 18. And a large part of the humor revolves around sex. Also, the book is very heavy on British slang, which can be distracting if you're not used to it. I heartily enjoyed the book, with that vaguely guilty pleasure I get from reading Cosmo in the supermarket line or downing a big bag of M&Ms in one sitting.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hilariously Sexy, February 16, 2000

I thought this book was very funny. The main character thinks, says and does alot of things that the average career/homemaker woman would love to do, but would never dare! It's a very easy read. It's a way of looking at a serious subject in a humorous way. The characters are great. They are very easy to identify with, although you might not want to admit that! A great, witty book to read if you want a break from all the books out there that are supposed to give you something to think about.Read it and have fun.

2.0 out of 5 stars Funnny, but very thin, and ultimately stupid, January 3, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Neurotica (Paperback)
I laughed out loud multiple times reading this book, which is why it took a while for me to realize that "funny lines do not a good book make." The plot is far fetched, the characters are superficial, the "erotica" is crass and amateurish, and the ending is absurd. It barely qualifies as a good beach read, and I felt like I needed a bath upon finishing it. I gave it two stars for the humor. But really--dumb, dumb, dumb.

1.0 out of 5 stars This Awful Piece Gives Women a Bad Name, November 1, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Neurotica (Paperback)
I've been a fan of some of the "Bridget Jones" style literature- particularly Marian Keyes and Anna Maxted, but this book, while not in keeping with the usual plot lines of Bridget Jones-ish "chick-lit" (the main character is unhappily married to a hypochondriac with two children) does nothing to revitalize this tiresome genre. The humor is not only contrived, but lame and at times immature. The protagonist is a selfish, manipulative, horrible woman whose family are in the background of this novel, while her sexual dalliances and fantasies are in the foreground. The plot is horrible, and the climax of the novel is not only poorly built up, it is tedious and lame. Many of the issues between the protagonist and her husband are not explored fully. The focus of the book is instead upon her sordid affairs. "Anna" is truly a portrayal of the worst kind of woman: someone who does not communicate with her spouse, doesn't stand up for herself by leaving him and instead indulges in affairs. This character gives women a bad name. And this piece of trash is not worth your money.

3.0 out of 5 stars Neurotic is right..., September 14, 2000
This review is from: Neurotica (Hardcover)
This book started off very funny and Bridget Jones-ish. But then something happened to the sizzle. The humor, wit and brassiness went the way of plastic jelly shoes...just disappeared. This book wasn't a struggle to read; actually it was quite readable. The storyline about a woman doing research into why women have affairs was something that I would never do personally, but could live vicariously through Anna. Parts of this book were very memorable (like the flasher in the grocery store), but other than that, Neurotica fell flat. All I can say is I'm glad it ended the way it did. I couldn't stand to read this much adulterous sex without there being a moral at the end of the story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful, charming, and endlessly entertaining..., July 24, 2000
This review is from: Neurotica (Mass Market Paperback)
"Neurotica" is one of the most witty and funny books I've read. Not only that, it was completely believable. From her husband's obsession with his health, to her mother's equally obsessed stalker, what's a girl to do that commit adultry with three devastatinly gorgeous men?

I'm certain you'll enjoy this book, especially if you've read books by Marian Keyes and Isabel Wolff. It's wickedly funny, and littered with yummy men that all married women fantasize about.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really fun!, January 7, 2002

Make sure you read this alone because you'll be making faces during the titillating sex! It's a fun, witty run through the eyes of a British-Jewish woman in a dysfunctional family. Would not consider it Bridget Jones-ish, though. The only similarity there would be that they're both by British authors. It has a certain predictability but it's just for fun anyway. Loved reading it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Done with skill and talent - and funny too., September 1, 2001

This is a British novel, but it has an American heart. Its American characters and jokes are so accurate and perceptive (and funny!) that you'd think Sue Margolis is American, or at least has spent a lot of time here. I teach creative writing and, while this isn't going to win any literary prizes, and isn't really the kind of thing I usually read, it's actually a textbook exercise in great novel construction. Really beautifully done. I'm looking forward to seeing this author's next novel.
