I had somehow developed a strange waxy buildup in my hair that I couldn't get out with other shampoos. My best guess is that it was a combination of cream rinse and shampoo that didn't play well together, but once it was there, it was almost as if I'd been using a pomade or something and I couldn't figure out how to get rid of the waxy buildup in my hair.

I first tried quitting the cream rinse and then switching up the shampoos, but there was always this waxy residue that nothing seemed to get rid of.

Until this. It's pricey and I don't especially like the smell (like baby powder on steroids to me), but it could be worse. And wow, it was just what I needed.

A month later: Okay, I just really like this shampoo (except for the smell, which I guess I'm getting used to). It leaves my long hair consistently gorgeous... I wish I could explain better what I mean. My hair seems very smooth and manageable and healthy whereas normally, I tend to have a kind of too full / too frizzy issue to deal with. This is more like my younger hair, when I didn't have to think about any of this so much.

Also, FWIW, I've realized that you don't need to use as much of this shampoo as most shampoos, which mitigates the price.

My hair and I are hooked. :-)

Update: My first bottle came from the grocery store and then I just ordered this from Amazon. First, it IS three bottles, so they fixed the problem noted by some reviewers. Second, with Subscribe & Save, the price is in the ballpark of half what it costs in the grocery store. Third, it still smells. :-)

Update, March 2011: FYI that the current price is twice what I used to pay. This was six dollars for a 12 oz. bottle, and was a deal at that price (compared to the grocery store). Now, meh.

Neutrogena Anti-Residue Shampoo is good at removing a build-up, but I would not recommend using it very often, especially if you have red colored hair. I think once-twice a week is OK, but if used more often, it can strip your color and make your hair weak and brittle.

The smell is something medicinal/herbal, but bearable for me.

If you:

a) have an oily scalp
b) use a lot of hairspray on a daily basis (or some kind of sticky hair product)
c) have thick, course hair
d) want to strip your hair color
e) use thickening shampoo often, (which deposits a film on your hair to make it appear thicker)
f) not afraid of products containing ammonium lauryl sulfate (one of the ingredients in this shampoo)

give it a try - you may like the result you will get after using it.
It will most likely leave your hair squeaky clean, but don't forget to use a good conditioner. Without a conditioner this shampoo leaves my hair quite dry.

I will not repurchase Neutrogena Anti Residue Shampoo for a while: I don't use it often + it is very concentrated, so you use less of it, (which is actually a plus).
I can't give it more than 3 stars because I think Neutrogena should have put a warning on the label for people with color treated hair. Also, their claim "for all hair types" is a little bit misleading - I don't think it is good for people who have a very dry scalp. From normal type of hair to oily - more likely, but not for "all hair types".

Fantastic product, use one a week and your hair feels really clean. Wish you could buy it in the U.K. HOWEVER be warned Amazon advertises this item as a pack of 3 but when delivered is only a pack of 1. I thought it was a error the first time but when it was resent the same thing happened again

I have used this shampoo for over 20 years. I absolutely love it! It does everything that it claims to. True, it's an excellent cleanser for shampoo and/ or conditioner build-up but it also works magic for those of us who tend to have moderate to severe scalp acne. I've found that use of regular shampoos after several days makes my scalp and hairline break out. I rectify this problem with one or two daily uses of this shampoo and the problem is gone. It works so well that I occasionally massage it on a pimple or breakout on any other part of my body, while in the shower, and it quickly dries out the area and hastens healing. I've recommended it to friends and family and all have had the same positive results. The only problem I have is that this particular product is all but impossible to find at any store in my area including Walmart and Target. I'm not sure what their problem is but at least I can still get it online. Thanks Neutrogena for an excellent product...

I have really oily hair, and using this product once a week really helps. I know a lot of people don't like the smell, but I kinda like it.

I used to use it, because it is a great product, and it really does refresh hair that has seen the same shampoo day after day. I have since discovered that about a teaspoonful of baking soda mixed in my hands with a little bit of my regular shampoo does the same thing. It's a lot cheaper too.

This product had both good and bad effects on my hair. In the first place, it almost completely made my oily hair and scalp nonexistent. This was so delighting for me, but only after using it twice, my hair dandruff started to grow extensively to extents not experienced in many years. Therefore, I really recommend people who have/had dandruff problems to avoid this shampoo.

started using neutrogena years ago. my first haircut after i switched, the hairdresser asked what i had done to my hair because it was so much softer and shinier. i was thrilled to find that amazon is selling the large bottles that are not available in my city. quickly shipped, quickly received, and quickly used.

Great product for my hair which is oily in a day's time. I use this once a day, and it keeps the oil out. My hair feels very clean. I've been using this product for over 10 years, and it doesn't disappoint. So if you have oily hair, try it.
Shipment was quick, price was right, Amazon also never disappoints.

This product really works !! I have never felt my scalp so clean and my hair so smooth after using any other shampoo, and I didnt even use a conditioner.
