4.0 out of 5 stars It works
I used it, and it works better than anything else. The concentrated 2% tar is better than the typical 1% tar, but, I don't think it's necessarily worth the difference, unless you have a real bad case. The 1% T-Gel is comparable to a generic drugstore brand I've used; the main difference is that the Neutrogena shampoo base seems to be easier on the hair than the generic...

1.0 out of 5 stars Leaves hair dry !!
I have severe scalp dermatitis and wanted a cheaper shampoo since the presrcibed one costs $50. It works but it leaves my hair terribly dry and causes breakage so one problem gets solved but then you have another one. The T Sal works better.

I used it, and it works better than anything else. The 1% T-Gel is comparable to a generic drugstore brand I've used; the main difference is that the Neutrogena shampoo base seems to be easier on the hair than the generic. Again, it depends on your hair, its length, and thickness.

My main worry with coal tar shampoos is the health risk of coal tar. It's a VOC, and generally, putting VOCs on the skin isn't doing your liver any favors. Some people also say it's carcinogenic. Consequently, I've cut back on using this shampoo, using it for special occasions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great product at the best price!, October 25, 2009

I have been using T-Gel for years - since before it was owned by Neutrogena. It is the only thing that works on my scalp. I tend to alternate it with another shampoo. I used to use it with the T-Gel conditioner, but now I get the Neutrogena Triple Moisture conditioner.

This price is much better than I can find anywhere else. Usually the 8.5 oz bottles are close to $15 each in the grocery store or drug store.

It works extremely well. I don't feel dry and my hair is soft after shampooing. The best part is the extremely cooling sensation it gives when shampooing!

Nearly 40 years ago, I used to run on the beach every lunch hour, after changing in the community locker room. There was a dermatologist who did the same thing. One day I made an appointment to see him for various reasons, including a dandruff problem and an itchy scalp. He told me that he kept a bottle of this shampoo in his locker and used it himself every day in his shower after a run. He advised me to do the same. I responded, "You mean I should use this stuff for the rest of my life?" He just looked at me and said, "Use it a couple of times week, if you don't want to use it every day." Well, after several decades of daily use, I can testify that it not only works but I've had barbers ask me what kind of shampoo I use to keep my hair in such great shape. All in all, I guess I'll use it for the rest of my life, gratefully.

I see a lot of people reviewing the neutrogena t-gel shampoos...

i recently got some and decided to just mix it IN with my regular shampoo !

That way there is MUCH more foaming and cleansing and the smell of the t-gel is

cut down quite a bit ! It IS a fantastic product for scalp itch & flaking !

I have been using this product for years, strayed recently (tried a store brand knock off) and came back to it this because it cannot be beat. Great stuff for controlling itch and it works for a long time.

I've used T/Gel for years. Once a week I use it instead of my regular shampoo and it keeps the flakies away. If I quit using it, they come back within a couple months.

Generally about the best non-prescription anti-dandruff shampoo around. If you hate the smell, you may not like this, although the smell which remains is much less chemically than when you are lathering. There are several generic versions which are less expensive. The fragrance is slightly different in each.

A woman is likely to object to the fragrance (of the coal tar which makes it work) more than a male, but the use of a conditioner on your hair after the shampoo totally gets rid of the original fragrance.

If this (or in a really bad case the extra-strength version of this) does not get rid of your dandruff, I suspect that you should consult a physician about your scalp problem.

2.0 out of 5 stars not good for those who are balding!, December 18, 2011
By
This review is from: Neutrogena T-Gel Terapeuthic Shampoo, Original, 4.4 Fluid Ounce (Health and Beauty)
Both my husband and I love Neutrogena products. We've both been using their face cleanes for years and love them. Earlier in the year my husband started using this to help with his dandruff and he really liked it a lot. It did help with the flacking, not perfectly but well enough. However, I started noticing an increased amount of his hair in the shower and on the floor in the bathroom then ever before. I also noticed his balding spot getting bigger at an alarming rate but I just figured it is all part of getting older. One day I found myself in a conversation with a coworker about dandruff shampoo (I know...random!) and I mentioned that my husband has been using T-gel with success but I never mentioned anything about the hair falling out. She told me to make him stop using it right away. She said that most of these kinds of shampoos do not actually fix the problem of dandruff but instead puts a coating on the scalp preventing the flakes from falling off which clogs the pores and makes the hair fall out faster than normal. As soon as I got home that night I told my husband this and he changed back to using a regular shampoo. We noticed a major difference within the first week. There is not even half the amount of hair falling out now that there was! Please note that I have not done any research to verify this and it is possible that it is a unique case to my husband. However, it is still something worth considering when thinking about using this product or something similar.
