5.0 out of 5 stars ESCAPING THE PAST OR FINDING SENSE OF SELF
A mystery woman (Brennamen) comes to the town and allows herself to find comfort and trust with the women of the town (Kirstie Alley, Kathy Najimy, etc). She is able to confront her past and find solice in herself as well as form a strong bond with the women of the town.

The movie is not a chick flick, it is hands down a feminist flick. Brennamen, Alley and Najimy...

Enjoyed the music mostly. I want to know who sang Danny Boy at the end of the movie. The credits show Paula Frazer. Never heard of her, but enjoyed her voice. Also they credit someone called Shea. Maybe Shea was the singer of Danny Boy. Anybody know?

The movie is not a chick flick, it is hands down a feminist flick. Brennamen, Alley and Najimy and the rest of the cast give outstanding performances as strong, compassionate, understanding, loving women who contend with the hand that life delt them.

It is a movie which you'll want to keep in your collection and take out to renew your sense of self.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, but not for everyone, July 1, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Nevada [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This movie is truly beautiful, but I think it will appeal to select tastes. If you don't enjoy movies with slow, deliberate pacing, you probably won't like this. If you don't enjoy movies that rely heavily on the setting, mood, and simplicity, then again, this probably isn't your movie.

I loved it, but then, I enjoy all of those things. The cast is excellent, the location is perfect in so many ways, and I think the movie that I would use to gauge whether or not you'll enjoy this is The Horse Whisperer. Both movies rely on the idea of places, space, environment, and open air as a healing agent and tool of self-discovery.

4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent movie, March 3, 2000

The music soundtrack is excellent. The director does an excellent job of playing out a depressed and down trodden housewife's escape from her boring life. I really loved all the different characters in the movie. The location was an excellent choice. The movie protrays the sometimes realities of life. I watched it many times.

1.0 out of 5 stars WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT, February 26, 2003
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Nevada [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This is such a potentially excellent story. I can only wonder why the writers and producers totally ... it up. I also wonder about Ms. Brenneman... she is really a talented actress but almost every role she takes on turns her into a .... This movie makes her look ... too.

The movie is about a wonam on the run. From what we never really find out. She ends up in a small no name town. The town has no men only women. She learns that the guys are all away during the entire week at a dam construction site and they return home on Friday nights and leave again the next Monday morning.

The women run the town and are bored to distraction. When Ms. Brenneman's character arrives in town the women all begin to speculate on why she is there. Each of them come to their own conclusions and this causes so much unrest that one even gets shot. Later we learn that she's run away from a marriage and 3 children. The real reasons why she has done this never seems to materialize. Eventually someone calls her husband who arrives with their 3 children. After what is supposed to be a 'hot' encounter between husband and estranged wife, (but leaves one feeling sullied by the totally tastelss sex act and would have been better left on the editing room floor) the husband packs the kids into the car and drives into the setting sun because she won't go with him.

This movie could have been so much more, but it had a lot of unnecessary 'sex' scenes thrown in where it cheapened the human spirit. The men were portrayed as nothing more than rutting partners. Truely woeful!

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting independent film, October 11, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Nevada [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I loved the music in this film which is why I give it three stars. It's sort of strange, especially the unique style of the director, who reveals the story slowly, mysteriously. The storyline: basically, a lonely, unhappy housewife with two kids walks out on her life after her teenage son arrongantly calls her "stupid" after she accidently drops the dinner that she was preparing for him. This is apparently the straw that broke the camels back, because she leaves before her anger causes her to do something she will regret. We never find out much more about her, why she is so fragile, why her son is so disrespectful, and her husband so distant. You only learn about her life from flashbacks. Instead, the film focuses on what happens after she leaves. The movie is filmed in the Southwest and the scenery adds a lot to the spooky sense of being cut off from civilization. Kirstly Ally plays an obnoxious flake who you wish would accidently fall off a cliff, but she redeems herself in the end. Angus Macfadyen (from Braveheart) has a cameo and does a great job. The two main characters are excellent actors. I thought this film was different and thought provoking. Ignore comments like the one from the reviewer who says this movie is only about a selfish person who leaves her family. This individual must be living an abysmal life tending to her responsibilities with gritted teeth, so I won't insult her intelligence (!), but this film is deeper than that. It sort of lives with you... you'll think about it all day after you watch it. At least, I did.

3.0 out of 5 stars potential, April 12, 2000
This review is from: Nevada [VHS] (VHS Tape)
It was a slow film to say the least and I think it creeps up on you a few days after being seen. The cast was wonderful and I think it had a lot of potential. I must admit the only reason I saw it was because of my interest in Kathy Najimy. The movie had some very moving moments between women. I loved the hot tub scene. Again Kathy Najimy. I own the film, so it had some redeemable qualities. It was a B movie. I like them.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Power of Browder, December 28, 2003
By

I watched this movie solely because Ben Browder was in the cast. I was delighted to find Kirstie Alley, as well.

I found myself fast forwarding after the first few minutes, checked out Browder's performances, then went back and watched the whole thing to try to give it a chance.

After reading other reviews, I guess I was bored because, although I am a fan of strong and independent women, I am in no way a feminist. I can only assume that's what colored my opinion, because none of these characters made me care about them, but they deserve at least 3 stars for making me want to throw things at the TV.

Mr. Browder, however, does NOT fail to entertain! Although I may question his taste in scripts, he always turns in an energetic performance. I guess I'd even pay to see him watch paint dry. Slow drying enamel paint.

I did enjoy Nevada. I thought the acting was very good. I just dont understand the storyline. I agree with the statement from the customer who said what family hasnt had promblems. the women in the movie i found to be very selfish. What kind of mother leaves her children behind just because shes tired of cleaning the house and making a meatloaf just because she wants to find her spirit. im tired of these feamle movies making women feel they should get up leave to find there interchild.
