A well deserved praise for research,
By Kathleen Y Scott (Minden, NV USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Nevada Place Names: A Geographical Dictionary (Paperback)
I read this book as a father who wants to take his family on occasional trips around the state where I reside. I also like to know the meaning of names in our own area. Helen does an excellent job of research and concise, factual, and intriguing reporting of what is to be known about a Nevada name. It is alphabetically organized and even the introduction, as brief as it is, is rich in the equipping of the reader with Nevada history. This book is a treasure alongside a gazeteer and or atlas of the state of Nevada.

I found this book to be an excellent reference source for points within the State of Nevada; both in the present and past. A very thorough work product.

Was looking for the Origin of a place name in Nevada, and found the entry for that place name a bit lacking, as it has two major thoughts of origin based on either dust devils in the summer or hot springs and cold days. But I got a date that it appeared on a map. Unmarked (unnamed) on Freemont's map of 1843-1844, but on a Western Pacific Rail Road map of 1854. That Narrows the search considerably. After reading another entry I wondered about, Alcatraz Island, I thought of all the Pelicans that use the Western Flyway, and wondered at her choice of origin. After a few days of reflection, I saw clearly how her strong Research Mind Set forced her to the inevitable conclusion -- yes, I believe she is correct. Having spent a good part of my life in NW and N Central Nevada, there are names that make one wonder, and then there are places that you KNOW have a name, but they are unmarked on USGS topo maps. Where to go? -- right here! Alpha by name, not location. 5 stars because this is the best I've seen in about a month of research.
