Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-3–The format in these easy readers is much the same, with sections covering history, people, land, economy, and government. Each volume also includes a fact page with information on the state's population, capital, square miles, flag, flower, tree, animal, etc. A full-color photo, reproduction, or fact box appears on almost every page. The limited vocabulary and simple sentence structure can lead to some confusion. In Oregon, the only sentence describing World War II states, In the early 1940s, the United States went to war against Japan. There is also a factual error in this title when it states that Mount Hood is an extinct volcano. In reality it is a dormant volcano. The other two books seem more clearly written. If an easy reading level is important, the titles in Ann Heinrichs's This Land Is Your Land series (Compass Point) are better choices. If reading level is not the first consideration, then select books in the Hello U.S.A (Lerner) or From Sea to Shining Sea (Children's Press) series.–Elaine Lesh Morgan, Multnomah County Library, Portland, OR
