Genious concept... and OH-so FUN!,

ok, THIS is one very cool book! Made for anyone who just wants to get out and enjoy some Nevada backroads or access the public lands for camping, hiking or any other outdoors activity... this is defitely a great concept in books. I have done 3 trails so far and we had such a good time on the suggested scenic routes, I'd rate this book an 11 OUT OF 10! The team who put this awesome book together have used TOPO maps, which really add a great graphic detail. They also write up lots of GHOST TOWNS and include PHOTOS of what they used to look like. GPS coordinates, detailed directions, and landmarks throughout the book make it fabulous. ALL COLOR, with many, many photos of the areas you travel to. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!! Great gift too :-)

The western state of Nevada offers a wealth of outdoor adventuring for visitors and residents of all ages, interests, and backgrounds. The team of Peter Massey, Angela Titus, and Jeanne Wilson have collaborated to create "Nevada Trails: Western Region", a thoroughly 'user friendly', superbly illustrated, detailed, 263-page compendium of practical information on backroads and 4-wheel drive trails, ghost towns and mining camps, campsites and hiking trails around such landmark destinations as Reno, Carson City, Lake Tahoe, Tonopah, and Hawthorne. Perfect for itinerary planning for anything from a simple day trip to an extended outdoor vacation, "Nevada Trails: Western Region" is enhanced with in-depth trail descriptions, integrated GPS coordinates, mile-by-mile directions, and maps for each showcased trail. Nevada Trails: Western Edition" is an ideal and enthusiastically recommended reference for scenic drivers, trail hikers, mountain bikers, 4-wheel vehicle excursionists and arm-chair travelers!

You can toss all your others and give praise on each page for the hard work and genius layout of this book series.
Best to have a navigator, and gps or you might end up on the top of the mountain with no more road, however. Too many side roads even for the best book to address. Great read, even if you stay home.

A Few Caveats,

I agree, this is a great book with fine artistic maps presented for every trail and great color photos that give the reader a real sense of the road. Each edition of this series of books for California and Nevada seem to get better and better, and I use them all the time for planning and on the road. But this Western Edition of Nevada has a serious flaw in the one place that MOST needs clarity for repeated references--the double-page overview map on the inside cover. The two maps are pasted side by side in what appears to be an singe map, until one realizes the roads and borders don't match up. In fact, it turns out that the two maps are based on two different scales! Thus no amount of matching up will ever produce a full overview. If they were not presented so close together, one might be able to make the jump from one scale to the other, but they simply invite equal scale assumptions as a single graphic. What makes it even more confusing is that few of the main roads are even identified and thus it is hard to reconcile the two scales. I finally copied both pages, reduced the left map to 80 percent, and then glued them together over the originals--a perfect match. Now I can find my way around without feeling cross-eyed. These writers produce so many superb maps throughout the book, that this important oversight must have just not been anticipated until the final copies came back from the printer, or the two scales enabled them to fit the double spread on the paper. But their is more than enough empty area on the old maps that could be easily cut out to make the new map work. Either that or I AM cross-eyed! Crossed up or not, this is still a great book, and I agree with the other reviewer....give us more, more!

Not enough drives for the region covered,

There are many more interesting 4 wheel drives in the area covered which I've heard of but would like instructions about. Some to much more interesting locations than those picked by the author. Let's hope for expanded future editions.
