"You didn't answer my questions about the festival. Will you go with me?"

"And show you the real Bayou de Joie?" Brianne said. "Like the pirate Lafitte's hideout, the tavern where he and his men sat, drank, and planned their next raid, and maybe even where he supposedly hid his treasure?"

Mace shrugged. "That, and perhaps where an eager Californian can take a Southern lady to lunch and get to know her a little better "

"What kind of business are you in, exactly?" she asked, suddenly wanting to know more about this man who was causing a myriad of conflicting emotions to speed through her body.

"Investments," he said. "And you're avoiding the subject of being my guide."

"I have other guests to see to. And work to do."

Mace reached out and touched her hand, brushing his fingers lightly down its side.

Brianne shivered and looked up at him, but she didn't pull away.
