From the Inside Flap

Great business performance doesn't happen by chance. You can have all the cost-cutting initiatives, employee engagement programs, and technology upgrades that you want, but unless every resource and employee are intentionally aligned with a compelling vision, you'll leave too much on the table and lose out to competitors. So what is the key to getting breakthrough results in this age of "doing more with less"?

Never by Chance gives you a top-to-bottom guide on how great businesses accelerate their strategies in spite of today's resource-constrained environment. Forgoing the usual miracle cures, this realistic approach will help leaders catalyze their organizations by adopting the leadership mindset that "every resource that can be valuable, will be valuable."

In Never by Chance, you'll find:

  • The direct link between vision and stakeholder success

  • Why a purposeful customer experience is absolutely necessary

  • Why you may no longer be relevant to your customers

  • How to use your culture as a competitive advantage

  • Why intentional leadership matters

A strong quarter, hot product, or sudden sales bump can always be a fluke, but sustained excellence is never an accident. Written by three seasoned experts on aligning people and strategy to drive measurable results, Never by Chance gives you and your team an engaging and empowering road map to create clear competitive advantage and distinguish your company in today's ultra-competitive market.

Never by Chance by Calloway, Feltz, and Young is an excellent leadership book that balances theory and practice. Its core themes; Vision, Culture, Relevance, and Customer Experience, are masterfully portrayed as the key ingredients of exemplary organizations where employees are engaged and customers are loyal. Further, the authors demonstrate that the power of these four themes is magnified when they operate in unison. The authors share their impressive "know how" and speak to their practical experiences of leading and/or consulting for large and impressive organizations. They truly know how to align people and strategy through intentional leadership. They provide the reader with key practices that are essential to creating an organization that aspires to thrive in a competitive world. Not only have they clearly and concisely written about how to create and nurture exemplary organizations, they have done it! And, they emphasize the book's key points with specific examples of success! I read a good number of leadership books each year and consider this to be one of the very best. Any leader from the corporate world, the field of education, the health and social services sector, or any other type of organization will immediately be able to implement practical action steps from what they learn by reading this book. Never by Chance is one of the definite "essential reads" in 2010 and beyond!

As the subtitle describes -- "Aligning People and Strategy Through Intentional Leadership", this book is aimed at helping you hone your strategic leadership skills. And, it does so that is a very comfortable, conversational, style with ideas, snippets, stories and anecdotes to make the points.

Each of the three authors brings a wealth of experience -- and a different set of experiences -- to the table. And, I have had the pleasure of working with one of the three: Chuck Feltz.

This book is the perfect book as an "airplane read" or to just pick up and randomly open it to a chapter and start reading. There are many excellent tidbits of advice and counsel; some of my favorites are outlined, below.

"Chapter 1: Vision - Begin with the End in Mind": When laying out a vision, there are three possible and intended outcomes with your employees and team:

1. They get it, see it, and are reedy to go.
2. They want to go forward with you but they have questions and need legitimate clarifications on what you've told them to help you make the commitment.
3. They find that they do not want to "sign up" for whatever reason and leave.
4. They find that they do not want to "sign up" and will neither engage nor leave.

It is pointed out that the fourth choice is disrespectful and unfair to those who choose to sign-up and compromises the value the company needs to deliver to its customers and shareholders.

And, I would say there's a fifth choice made by some employees: They lay in the weeds and are actively subversive to the leader's stated vision.

As the authors point out, it is important to get in front of everyone with your vision: "A secret vision is a worthless vision.

The role of a leader of any organization is to create a shared vision; everyone knows what is expected of them, and everyone feels like they're a part of something special. They clearly understand "what the deal is".

The three authors of this book - Joe Calloway, Chuck Feltz & Kris Young - also know what the deal is, and they clearly communicate that message to the reader in this wonderfully concise bundle of information. The ability of an organization to allign people to strategy is critical to its long-term success; unfortunately, many organizations are falling short of this objective. In short, they need to read and heed the message delivered in this pragmatic guide.

It could be the most significant book any CEO will read this year, or any year, for that matter.

Reading Never By Chance is like spending time with a terrific mentor. The book is filled with
the kind of information you can only learn from effective C-level leaders (Feltz is one of these) and
unlike so many business materials--it is very readable. The stories and experiences make the advice immediately
practical and demonstrates that consistent and intentional leadership drives concrete results.
My advice: Read this! Then share it with the other executives at your company.
