About the Artist

Mairéid Sullivan has been singing since her childhood in West Cork, Ireland. Mairéid (rhymes with 'parade') was born on a farm at Lisheens, Kealkill, about four miles from Bantry Bay. "Music was everywhere. My father was a master horseman and a wonderful tenor who encouraged me to sing. My mother taught me traditional songs." Mairéid has received excellent reviews for her two earlier solo recordings, For Love's Caress (1998) and Dancer (1994). She appears on several best-selling Celtic music recordings, including a duet concert recording, A Celtic Evening, with Derek Bell, the harper with the Chieftains.

She is the author of Celtic Women in Music(1999). The second volume is due for publication in 2003. Ancient Self - Memoirs, a poetry collection, was published in 1997. Her latest work, A Young Woman of High Years, will be published in 2003. Mairéid is a student of history, with a special interest in Celtic culture. Her poetry, essays and articles have appeared in many publications, including Hugh Downs’ My America (2002).

Product Description

Never Drift Apart Songs of joy, struggle, and hope By Mairéid Sullivan

Never Drift Apart, the third solo recording and independent release by Irish-born traditional and contemporary singer, poet, and author, Mairéid Sullivan, is an imaginative musical journey through soulful ballads, soaring slow airs and mesmerizing dance rhythms - songs of joy, struggle and hope. As Mairéid notes: "Our vision for these songs is to create a comforting and energizing canopy of sound for the listener, recreating the experience my mother created for me when she sang me to sleep as a child. Each song is a world unto itself: songs of joy, struggle and hope. I grew up in the Irish countryside but I feel that I am a part of every place I have been around the world. My home is everywhere. I wish to remind everyone that music helps us thrive in the chaos of the world."

Maireid is the winner of Creatrix Studio's 2003 New Millennium Award, for her latest recording Never Drift Apart. She is a visionary musician, whose evocative music transports you beyond time and space. Her crystalline voice is always melodious and often angelic and otherworldly, and it will envelop you in spells of enchantment.
.
Her songs have a strong Celtic flavor with melodies that will soothe your spirits and calm your frailed nerves. Listening to Maireid is like sailing across pristine water on a crystal-clear day. Don't miss this magnificent recording--it's a beauty.

5.0 out of 5 stars Music that slows me down., April 21, 2003

This review is from: Never Drift Apart (Audio CD)
As an American child of the 60's my idea of new music is usually a remastered CD of an old Neil Young or Eric Clapton album. Something really new often has to be dropped in my lap.

Such was the case of Maireid Sullivan's "Never Drift Apart." It was a gift from a friend --- and now it will be a gift TO my friends. What a breath of fresh air! I pop this one on at the end of the day to guide me in my transition from work to rest. My wife plays it first thing in the morning to help "start the day calmly." I guess you could say that we use Ms. Sullivan's beautiful music and sweet voice medicinally. To follow this metaphor to its logical conclusion: medicine does not have to taste bad to be good. This medicine, in fact, tastes great!

If you think it is a good idea to take a deep breath now and then, but sometimes don't schedule enough time for breathing, get this CD.

And just to prove that my taste has not changed all that much, there is even a song written by Eric Clapton included in this beautiful collection.

-Thom Rutledge, author of Embracing Fear (HarperSanFrancisco)

5.0 out of 5 stars A voice that puts goosebumps up your spine......., April 19, 2003

Close your eyes and allow the oft otherworldly voice of Maireid Sullivan to wash over you and penetrate your being. As in her earlier albums, these selections will bring you back to replay this one again and again. Some of these songs strum such an emotional chord in the listener that you find her voice puts goosebumps up your spine.

Whether it be traditional Celtic music or contemporary ballads, the entrancing blend of words and music will soothe the soul and enlighten the heart. These are musical adventures to be relished and repeated!
