a band-ography for Cure fans,
This review is from: Never Enough: The Story of the Cure (Hardcover)
It's nice to have a Cure biography and there is a heck of a lot of history to go through. In a way it's nice to have the book to make sense of all the different line-ups, who did what when, and how and why everyone came to be in the band.
Also the story in the beginning about Robert's brother taking him to the Isle of Wight festival is priceless. I won't say anymore here so that you'll go get the book! It probably could be better but there's still enough good info in there for Cure fans that they won't be dissapointed. Another important thing to mention is that he interviewed Lol Tolhurst, and some other former members, so you get more than one perspective on the old days, which is cool.

A Great!! GREAT! Book. Starting from when Lol Tolhurst, Mike Dempsey, Simon Gallup, and Robert Smith joined and from other band join ins and outs. Talks an awful lot of Robert Smiths life as a child with his childhood friend and former bandmate Lol Tolhurst. Incredible book!! There is alot more tho that I would have wanted to see. THe author cut off at some songs when introducing an album to speed up the book. Alot of songs were left unspoken of which kinda ticked me off but other than that I LOVED it!!
For Cure fans alike this book is a MUST read!!! It's great! Don't hesitate, buy it!! You will love it!!

Insightful but lacking in parts,
By Kath (Washington, DC) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Never Enough (Paperback)
This is definitely an interesting read if you want to know the dynamics throughout The Cure's history as a band but I was left a little dissatisfied. The author interviewed several band members so you do gain a good perspective on the band. But there was relatively little in the way of Mary Poole's role, and I find it hard to believe that she played a minor part in Robert Smith's songwriting/motivation. Also, as a previous reviewer mentioned, it did bother me that the author seemed to speed through later albums, when I was especially curious about the making of certain songs. And I did notice that, having read a series of interviews, certain points were skipped over - such as the fact that Fascination Street was written in reference to Bourbon Street (unless that's not true either??). Seemed odd to me that the author would dwell on 3 Imaginary Boys but would glaze over Disintegration.
I do recommend this book, don't get me wrong. Just don't expect it to answer every question in relation to The Cure.

This review is from: Never Enough: The Story of the Cure (Hardcover)
This book was absolutely amazing. I have been a serious Cure fan for over 25 years and I must say this book was a fantastic read. The author really did his research. Its definitely a must read for anybody who wants to know the whole story or at least all that the author could get out of the boys.I'll probly read it again there was so much info. The behind the scenes of a band whose career has spanned over 30 years in detail like you can't imagine.....

i am a diehard cure fan since about 1985, but this book told me so much info i really feel like i did my homework! excellent stories, amazing detailed, fairly balanced on controversial issues, great photos. if you wish you'd been in on the cure during their teenage years, this book will fill you in to a serioius level. truly entertaining read.
i'd recommend this highly...but please avoid In Between Days: An Armchair Guide to the Cure unless you really just want to read discographical info.

Not definitive but interesting,
This review is from: Never Enough (Paperback)
I got the impression that Robert Smith had a minimal input on this book and consequently although well researched and interesting it appears to do little more than explain the complex network of line up changes that have occurred over the 30+ years of the Cure's existence and the albums they recorderd.
There is a footnote how Steve Severin demanded 200 pound appearance money to give an interview and this was declined. However as Smith was a Banshee throughout the Join Hands tour in 1979 and spent 19 months as part of the band in the early 80's and was involved with the production of Blue Glove and Hyena, it seemed odd that 200 quid was too high a value for the insight that Severin could have provided. The band were amazingly prolofic with output and touring and despite the multiple line up changes the original nucleus of the band has always kept friendships and have all enjoyed multiple tenures in the various line ups. I did enjoy the fact that it was not all Robert Snith and found the characters of Gallup and Tolehurst were sufficiently prominent to make the reader view them as very much a part of The Cure and not just Robert Smith's backing band. Smith does come accross as an individual that knows very much what he wants to do and is not interested in compromise. The way that he handles the sacking of the various band members seemed very cold and at times almost cowardly but the same memebers have been wiling to return and still retain ties. He is clearly very strong willed and if ever he does commit more to any biography, I am sure that he can add some intersting and amusing tales about the tours and the 6 year LSD bender with Severin, I did find the book lacking in that level of detail. The ideology behind the albums, concepts, frustrations and disappointments are well detailed and generally this book provides a very good overview of the history of the Cure. With a topic as vast as the Cure, I sometimes believe that any author may be better off selecting an element of a bands career and really dong that justice - Robert Smith the part time Banshee as an example. However the book is well written, easily digestable and although not the definiive Cure book is a good start.

A Great Book About The "King of Goth Rock" Robert Smith & The Cure !!!!!,
By Gary Covington "Southern Rocker" (Louisiana, U.S.A.) - See all my reviews (TOP 1000 REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Never Enough (Paperback)
This is an excellent, well written, well illustrated book on the history of Robert Smith (including his childhood) and his band "The Cure". It covers the details about the recording sessions for each "Cure" album, up through the albums "the Cure", & "Faith", & "Join the Dots" (Box Set). Its very interesting to find out all they went through while recording these albums. Robert Smith is quite a "character".
This book also contains a complete "Discography" of every album released by the Cure, from their beginning "Three Imaginary Boys" up through the 2004 release of "The Cure" album & "Join the Dots" (The Box Set). It also contains a list of all the people who have been members of the band, and the dates that they were members (They had quite a "turn-over"). It also contains a "Videography" of all their videos that have been released through the Video "Galore". This is a great book, and a "must-have" for any Cure fan, and I'm a fan. Do yourself a favor, and order one, you'll enjoy it. Its great reading for any rock fan period. Thanks!!!!

As complete a bio as we're going to find on The Cure until Bob really calls it quits for sure. The book is full of minutae and tidbits of The Cure you're not going to find anywhere else.

As a fan of The Cure, albeit a relatively casual one, I found this book provided a bunch of information I had no idea about, in a very engaging and entertaining way. If you appreciate The Cure, this is well worth a read, and not just for the completionists.
