Book Description

October 2003
The 100 short essays collected here were originally broadcast between 1979 and 1999 to rapt Sunday morning audiences on WCRB, a classical radio station near Boston. Scovel's five-minute radio sermons taught essential lessons to Bostonians of many faiths. Renowned for his preaching, for many years Scovel was pastor of King's Chapel, the historic Unitarian Universalist church on Tremont Street in Boston.

I love this book. I just purchased my fourth and fifth copies, as I keep lending or giving it away to people who are looking for a bit of inspiration. We find the short chapters are great as a basic daily devotional. Sometimes we are left laughing, other times thoughtful, but always nourished.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Power of Love, October 24, 2005
This review is from: Never Far from Home: Stories from the Radio Pulpit (Paperback)
This is a collection of wonderful short reads. Quirky stories by a proper Bostonian in the best sense of the term. Written by a believer whose observations connect, magnify and radiate.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thought provoking & wonderful essays, December 29, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Never Far from Home: Stories from the Radio Pulpit (Paperback)
This book is a collection of Carl Scovel's radio sermons, and it is wonderful. Each essay is roughly 2 to 3 pages, and each is a treasure. I have carried the book in my briefcase on the train for the past month and read a few sermons every day. It is a truly great book.

I guess the greatest testimony is that I bought an additional five copies and gave them as Christmas presents. One essay describes a Christmas service in England that is both funny and thought provoking-I read it to my family on Christmas Eve.
