Book Description

How can one day go so very wrong? One minute Meara Quinn is making plans for how she will spend the summer before her senior year and the next she's finding out that her mother's cancer has returned and they are moving away from the only home she's ever known.

Now every day is a struggle as Meara is trying to cope with her mother's illness, being forced to move to another country to live with grandparents--whom she thought disowned her mother--and having weird visions of a father who was absent her entire life. Top it all off with one whopping secret that everyone seems bent on keeping from her, and Meara has the perfect ingredients for a major melt down.

The only things keeping her from coming unglued are some new friends and Evan--the son of her mother's childhood friend--who seems to know Meara almost better than she knows herself.

Together with Evan and her friends, Meara embarks on a new journey to unlock the secrets that will not only tell Meara who she is, but what she is.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Risser keeps her focus on the little details of Meara's everyday life, lending the book a nice, homey charm. The real heart of the book is Meara's emotional struggle with her mother's illness and her first romance. ~Kirkus Reviews

From the Author

Never Forgotten is a fantasy novel, but it deals with a very real issue. Early in the story, Meara learns that her mother's cancer has returned. While I'd rather tell you that I didn't draw inspiration from personal experiences, the truth is, I did. Shortly before my husband and I got married, my mother-in-law (MIL) was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was hard to watch her fight for her life.

My message to you is this: do regular self-exams, starting now. You're never too young or too old. Don't be afraid to push for your health. If something doesn't sound right or you have questions, speak up! . Last, support cancer research. It will only be through research that we will ever find answers to fight this disease that takes so many.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully written! August 20, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
As an author and mother of six kids, I’m extremely picky about what I spend my limited time reading. Most books I pick up, I put down after the first few pages. Unless it’s a compelling beginning, I don’t waste my time reading the rest. The day I picked this book up, I’d already started and gave up on five other books. But Never Forgotten…I don’t even remember making the decision to give it a full read. I was simply swept up in the story. Meara is such a relatable, sympathetic main character and my heart went out to her and her terminally ill mother. Evan was the perfect love interest—equal parts understanding, sympathetic, and hot. The setting was unforgettable, and described so well that I almost felt as if I were there. In fact, I swear I could literally feel the biting chill coming off the Atlantic Ocean. And I read this in August!

This book is paranormal, but light on the fantasy and heavy on the character relationships. I thought it was a perfect balance for this story. I will definitely be picking up the next book in the series. I’m seriously anxious to find out where the author will take us next. Great job, Kelly! You’ve written a beautiful story!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Movie in my Head July 28, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
First, I do love the cover of this book. I love when book covers make sense and represent the story held within. This one is pretty!

I will say that I enjoyed the story here, and the journey of Meara. To me, this book was more sedate in it's telling. Maybe gentle and lulling would be a better description. There were no heart pounding moments or moments of desperation where, as a reader, I wanted to just tear through the pages to find out what was going to happen. The paranormal aspect is minimal in this book but will definitely pick up in the next book.

I liked all the characters in this book, they were easy to imagine and I felt like I was there, hovering over them throughout the book. I could easily see in my mind where they were and what they were doing. Even thinking back now, I have clear pictures in my head. I love when I get movies in my head!

Meara deals with a lot of heavy issues in this book. Her mother's cancer, moving to a new place and leaving her life and friends behind, learning about a father she has never known, weird things happening... there is a lot going on. Meara is a character that is easy to like though. I was rooting for her. It was more of in an outside way though. Me, on the outside looking in on a great story. I just needed that emotional connection to pull me in and make me a part of the story.

There are sexual encounters in the book. They are not described in any detail, but you know it happens. There are some instances of mild swearing and some under aged drinking.

Of course the ending left me hanging, wanting to know more. I do believe the next book (Current Impressions) will be out soon!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great fantasy novel July 17, 2014
By Melissa
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I normally don't give five star rating but this book deserves it.

The sentence phrasing at the beginning of the book was a little awkward at first. The author quickly smoothed her writing out though and I'm so glad she did.

There is mystery, love and even a few tear jerking moments in this YA fantasy novel. For once it isn't about sparkly vampires or love sick werewolves. In fact, I will say the fantasy factor isn't one most people would think of. I applaud Ms Risser on being very original.

Definitely a great read and I will be checking out the sequel.

4.0 out of 5 stars good read for teens July 19, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Hats off to the way the story dealt with Meara's mother having terminal cancer, and her dad reappearing in their lives after being absent for most of Meara's life.
The reactions and emotions of all the characters involved felt honest to me.
It was nice to see that at no point did any of the characters get to take the easy way out, by getting to dodge the responsibility for their choices and actions.
There were no easy villains to lay the blame on - no stupid misunderstandings create artificial tension.

While the story could have been tightened up in places, it still managed to hold my attention.

There were some editorial mistakes (missing or wrong words, mostly), but not to the point that I couldn't figure out what should have been there.

The romance was sweet and well handled. The paranormal aspect was fairly low key for most of the book.

With even my kids being no longer teens - I'm way past the age of the target audience - but I still enjoyed reading this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Emotional and lovely!! July 6, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
Wow what an emotional beautiful book, I really enjoyed this book. It had me interested on page one all the way to the end. The author made the story feel real and she knew how to draw in the audience and keep them fully interested. A great book for young adults!!
Meara is not your typical teenager, she goes through a lot in this book. Her mother is sick and her father is not in the picture. My heart was shattered for this young girl. She has something that is going on with her, and I don’t want to give it away. Evan is a wonderful character. He was there for her. I love that. The book has some interesting turns and events. This book is one of my top favorites of the year. I would definitely recommend this book to my book friends.
Kelly is a brilliant author and I love her. This is the first book I’ve read from her and I will read more of her books. I really hope she continues with this series. I fell in love with the characters. Thank you Kelly for writing a wonderful book. =)

This was a good book but it has very little fantasy in it. It read like a detailed account of Meara's life after her mother is diagnosed with cancer. Read more

More About the Author

Kelly Risser knew at a young age what she wanted to be when she grew up. Unfortunately, Fairytale Princess was not a lucrative career. Leaving the castle and wand behind, she entered the world of creative business writing where she worked in advertising, marketing, and training at various companies.

She's often found lamenting, "It's hard to write when there's so many good books to read!" So, when she's not immersed in the middle of someone else's fantasy world, she's busy creating one of her own. This world is introduced in her first novel, Never Forgotten.

Kelly lives in Wisconsin with her husband and two children. They share their home with Clyde the Whoodle and a school of fish.
