Review

Never Give Into Fear is successful as a motivating tool and touching story. Marti's natural humor helps balance the book into a tale of both hurt and healing. This is a book everyone needs to read. It is not only a story about the danger of drugs, but about the power of the human spirit. - Star Rating: 5 out of 5, San Francisco Book Review

More About the Author

Marti MacGibbon is an award-winning author -- 2013 National Indie Excellence Award Finalist for her memoir, "Never Give in to Fear: Laughing All the Way Up from Rock Bottom. She is a human trafficking survivor and recovering addict, humorous inspirational speaker and standup comic who holds four professional certifications in addiction treatment, including the ACRPS, Advanced Certified Relapse Prevention Specialist. Marti is a member of the National Speakers Association and her articles have appeared in numerous trade publications and magazines. She's been interviewed in Investors Business Daily and Entrepreneur, and on ABC, CBS, and numerous radio shows.

Marti was one of the first women to work as a laborer in the Texas oilfield. She set off explosives for an exploration company for a brief period of time and then learned surveying skills, staking oil wells. She moved on to standup comedy and was scheduled for an appearance on The Tonight Show, but Marti became entangled in the California drug scene and plunged into the underworld and serious drug addiction. Her darkly humorous and dramatic memoir, "Never Give in to Fear," tells the story, and the narration brings alive a host of quirky characters and bungling criminals.

If I didn't already know Marti lived through her ordeals I might not have been able to make it through her book. (I was fortunate to recently have seen her awesome standup routine and meet her before being given her book as a gift.) Even still, I found myself completely gripped by her story, and at the same time feeling the darkness of her addiction, and yearning for her escape from it. As another reviewer mentioned, I too was surprised at how well written this book is. Marti's words are genuine, gritty, funny, heartbreaking, honest and, in the end, tell the story of a life beautifully transformed by powers greater than addiction. I love this book!! Marti's a gift.

Never Give Into Fear is a roller coaster ride on the addiction train that takes us to the highest of highs and lowest of lows. Marti MacGibbon's book is filled with mind-boggling misadventures from the sex trade in Japan to the homeless haunts of the river people to the drug dealers in the seamy back alleys of San Francisco. Marti's story shows just where the insanity of addiction can take us. Sometimes funny, often poignant, and frequently heartbreaking the book reads like fiction but is rooted in an honesty the challenges not to look away. Surely this book will serve as a cautionary tale for anyone who is tempted by the "glamour" of drugs. Ultimately, Marti's story is one of redemption and we rejoice in her recovery.

Marti MacGibbon's memoir is a very compelling account of her descent into despair and drug addiction. It is an insightful look at how an addict is sucked into the cycle of dependency and how it is difficult to overcome the hold that drugs can make on a person's life. The story also relates how she ultimately triumphs over the addiction by channeling her own tenacity and with the love and support of family and friends. It was an inspiring read.

I opened this book and life stopped while I read about the author's. Her incredible trip from recreational drug usage into full blown addiction and eventual recovery makes for unbelievably great reading. Throughout the book I caught myself saying, out loud, "Oh No! Don't do THAT."
This book is so well written. It's so worth reading.
And...it will definitely save lives.

I am so glad I read this book. From page one Marti's story grabbed me by the ankles and did not let go until the end of this book. What an adventure she experienced. I'm glad she was able to share a part of her gripping, frightening past. I hope to see her story on the big screen. This book is one I will read over and over again. I highly recommend it.Great book!

this is the story of an addict, a person who trades her life for drugs. It is the story of life on the bottom and it gets tedious and boring. Her recovery does not come until the very end and with little explanation. I would have enjoyed a lot less of the repetitive drug escapades and more of the path back to having a whole life.

This is an amazing story of a woman sharing her life story that happens to deal with the consequences of addiction. And addiction took her to some very interesting places. And not some nice, recreational easy-going addiction - this woman was full on. I mean, you can't make this stuff up! And she's funny. An inspiring story of a woman running away from herself, then coming back and facing all the reasons she ran away in the first place. A thrill of a ride - couldn't put it down. Read it twice in one sitting. Would make a great film.
