More About the Author
Marti was one of the first women to work as a laborer in the Texas oilfield. She set off explosives for an exploration company for a brief period of time and then learned surveying skills, staking oil wells. She moved on to standup comedy and was scheduled for an appearance on The Tonight Show, but Marti became entangled in the California drug scene and plunged into the underworld and serious drug addiction. After being trafficked to Japanese organized crime and escaping, she suffered from post traumatic stress disorder and was homeless for over a year, but ultimately found true love, recovery and forgiveness. Her darkly humorous and dramatic memoir, "Never Give in to Fear," tells the story, and the narration brings alive a host of quirky characters and bungling criminals.
"Never Give in to Fear" has received critical praise from Foreword Clarion, Kirkus Reviews, Midwest Book Review, San Francisco Book Review, and Portland Book Review. This book is so well written. It's so worth reading.
And...it will definitely save lives.
However, about 60% through the book, I found myself getting a little bored and really wanting to see her life redeemed! She kept going back and back to her old way of life and the stories started to get repetitive and a little old. I guess I found myself saying, "okay, we get the picture. Now tell us about how you got better!" Unfortunately, only the last two chapters were dedicated to her recovery and even more unfortunate was how they were written. She mostly abandoned her story-telling style and took on a "self-help" tone. I understand that she wants to help the addicts who may be reading her book, but I wanted to know the details of how she got better - what it was like, what happened in her life then! She glossed over that part SO fast considering that the previous decade of despair was detailed in extreme depth. I truly wish she would have skipped a few drug stories and spent more time on stories of her recovery - instead of telling us that gratitude, love, and a 'higher-power' is what keeps her going from day to day. (not that those things are bad; they're great, just vague and not as inspiring as details about real experience).
I felt that after dealing with such a hard core addiction for so long that her change and recovery came too fast. It could have just been the way she wrote it, but either way - it felt like the whole book was building to the end (and her recovery) but the climax was just not that fantastic.
All and all I did enjoy this book and it kept me reading. I'd recommend it to anyone who wants to understand what it's like to be an addict of any kind. It will truly give you amazing insight into that.
