In the tradition of such great love song duets like Rick James and Teena Marie's Fire and Desire and Donny Hathaway & Roberta Flack's The Closer I Get to You, the sensual slow jam Never Givin' Up teams the late Aaliyah with an unknown male singer named Tavarius Polk.Opening with a light breeze and a peaceful piano, Liyah reflects on her relationship with her man. "Sittin' here in this empty room/Thinkin' 'bout you, baby/Thinkin' 'bout all the changes we've been through/And I know it might sound crazy/But I'm still lovin' you/In spite of all the simple things we've been through, we've been through/The way you make me feel/I can't explain/But I love what you do, what you do to me/When we're makin' love/You're drivin' me insane/See I can't go no higher." She then decides that she's "never givin' up on this love/Never givin' up/You're all I'm thinkin' of." Tavarius takes over the second verse. "Feels so strange when I was on the train/I cracked a smile on every thought of you/The things that you do make me feel so good inside/No need to lie, I'm on your side/No need to lie to you/I'm givin' my lovin' to you day and night/Aaliyah, I'm gonna be lovin' you!" Aaliyah's angelic vocals and Tavarius' husky tone have excellent chemistry and together work their magic on this beautiful song. Too bad it wasn't released as a single. The video could've been amazing. Anyway, don't forget to include this one if you're making a mixtape for that special someone. "Angels watchin' over you, over me!" |
