4.0 out of 5 stars A Very Unique Read, March 19, 2005
This review is from: Never Love a Cowboy (Mass Market Paperback)
Wow, this was only my second romance novel. My first was Moonlight Obsession by the same author. This one was very true to the old western time period, and was told so good I had a flawless movie running through my mind as my eyes clung to every word! There is someone everybody can relate to in this book, and its not the classic sappy kind with the drawn half-naked people groping eachother on the cover! Jill mixed in murder with pleasure, scandals and old fashioned family pride. Very much like the wild west version of Romeo and Juliet, except with a smarter, fistier Juliet in the lead! I'd recommend this book to anyone, I really enjoyed reading it, and that is saying a lot because I usually can't sit long enough to finish a book. I know you'll love it!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Not bad..., May 2, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Never Love a Cowboy (Mass Market Paperback)
This book started out VERY formula (i.e. hero and heroine really hate each other). In fact, if I read one more "Damn you, Garretson!" "Damn you Malloy!" I was going to slap the both of them upside the head! But then the story got better...much better. The characters started becoming more 3 dimensional and had some good sides, not just bad. And Emma and Tucker's physical attraction to each other! Wowee! Like magnets - the two of them. The whodunit mystery was very well done, too. I thought I had the villain figured out from the beginning but I was wrong! So all in all - worth reading. Good, likable characters (once you got through that opening section) and a pretty fast enjoyable read. P.S. A small aside: the inside cover art of Emma and Tucker was dead-on accurate. Loved it!

5.0 out of 5 stars What a WONDERFUL story!, September 28, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Never Love a Cowboy (Mass Market Paperback)
This was the first book I have read from Jill Gregory. Once I started I found that I just couldn't put it down! The loyalty and love for family that both Emma and Tucker showed was great! You fall in love with both Emma and Tucker, and just when you think everything is going to be okay, there is deception and betrayal. You find yourself hoping and praying they will see the truth and find their way to each other where they belong! It is a Great book! DON'T MISS THIS ONE!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars 4 1/2 stars...I really enjoyed it..., March 21, 2008
This review is from: Never Love a Cowboy (Mass Market Paperback)
This is my 6th Jill Gregory book & I really love her style of writing. It's easy, uncomplicated & not excessive. She's one of my favorite authors & this book is probably one of my favorites out of the books I've read from her. The storyline was very interesting & the mystery kept me guessing. Emma & Tucker were very likable & they had me rooting for them. The feud between their fathers really pulled me into the book & I loved watching the whole thing come together for a very nice ending. The only thing that would've made this a tiny bit better for me was a few good laughs. I highly recommend this awesome book & seller.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Western- could have been stronger but very good!, July 26, 2010
This review is from: Never Love a Cowboy (Mass Market Paperback)
This enjoyable Western romance is easily written like a 5 star novel, but has the safe and predictable storyline of a 3 star novel. Thus, I compromised at 4!!

Beautiful, turquoise-eyed Emma grew up on a Montana ranch that her father won in a hand of poker. The loser owns the other half of the range- that would be the Garrettson's, her family's sole enemy. (With good reason- can you imagine losing half your ranch in a poker game and having to watch the family keep house on it?)

Because of this fated poker game, Tucker Garrettson, the son of the poker loser, absolutely hates Emma, the daughter of the poker winner, and the feeling seems to be mutual. His family accuses her family of being cheats and her family simply wants to live off their winnings without harm.

Emma has just returned from finishing school in Philadelphia and comes just in time for all hell to break loose. Tucker's older brother has been found dead on her father's property, starting a range war and the emergence of old hatred and wounds. Of course, Tucker and his family think that Emma's father murdered the brotther and Emma and her father claim that they are framed. Thus, a murder mystery emerges in this passionate and fun Western.

Honestly, I think the novel could have really delved more into the murder mystery and the war and the passion... but as soon as the dilemma was presented it was whisked away into a much safer plot line having to do with some poor sap from Boston coming to woo Emma. If he had seemed a likely candidate at all there might have been some tension, but no, Emma seemed pretty sure she didn't want him from the very get go. So much of the plot revolved around the dandy from the East trying to woo the ranch girl and Tucker and Emma denying their feelings from each other.

I will say, when the writer finally did swing back to the matter at hand, I found myself pleasantly surprised by the finale! This was a good Western Romance but could have been much better. The writing style is superb and doesn't miss a beat, however, the plot was wanting.
