A Rockin' Good Listen!,

Benny Mardones really rocks! On fast tunes, ballads, whatever. Every song on 'Never Run Never Hide' is excellent; I can't choose a favourite but obviously 'Into The Night' is a classic. 'Hold Me Down' and 'Hey Baby' are close contenders but really they ALL tie for top place. Brilliant drums by Sandy Gennaro too! Check it out or miss out.......

I will admit to a bias where Benny Mardones is concerned. I am originally from Syracuse, NY, and from 1980-1984 no one, and I mean no one, could sell out any venue in town faster than Benny. To grow up in Syracuse at that time and not know who Benny Mardones was is akin to not knowing Springsteen since Born in the USA. Benny was most definately the biggest fish in our pond then. This album was mandatory. No, it was more important than that. It was life or death. We all knew every song, and most of us still do. I know I will never sing Hold Me Down the way I did as a teenager (not that I sang that song great then, but I tried), and I will never again be that teenager looking at the stage as he croons Into The Night. The memories are still there. Musically, this album rocks a lot harder than Into the Night would suggest. Hold Me Down is just boundless energy, Shes So Frech is deliberate but heavy, and the rest of the album is just fun and rock n roll. Now if they would only re-release Too Much To Lose........

"Into the Night" was released as a single in 1980 and being a 20 year old college student, it became my all time favorite power ballad and as far as I'm concerned, 30 years later it's still number #1 in my book.I know some people criticize the song, because it talks of a loving a 16 year old girl. What people FAIL to understand is that it's just a freaking song and the person singing it could have been a 16 year old kid at the time and now as an adult looks back and laments his life without her. In other words people, it's a song about teenage angst that all kids go through. Lighten up and stop looking for something that isn't there. In addition to "Into the Night", you have "She's So French" "Never Run Never Hide" and "Too Young", all songs that could have been hits if released as singles. (She's So French, was the B side to Into the Night when it was released as a 45) My only real criticism of the album was it had only 9 tracks, back in the day when 11 or 12 tracks were the norm. I got to see Benny in concert when he came to Atlanta promoting the album and despite the small venue, he really tore the place down, and I rank that concert as one of the best live acts I've ever heard. The fact he had a HUGE American flag in the background as his response to some nasty comments Elvis Costello had made about the United States, didn't hurt either! In other words he wasn't a left wing weenie and that carried allot of weight with me, and still does. I own most of his other albums as well, and enjoy them too but, "Never Run Never Hide" is still my favorite. His unique and powerful voice has never been matched as far as I'm concerned and anyone who enjoys a REAL Rock and Roller should add this album to their collection. The only thing you'll be disapointed in as I said is that it's only 9 songs.
