Book Description

December 5, 2006
Never Surrender is the dramatic first-person account of Earl Anderson’s fight for survival during and after the devastating Japanese attack on the Philippine Islands of WW II. Earl Anderson was an ordinary Navy sailor placed under extraordinary circumstances. He narrowly avoided death when the invading Japanese army on the Bataan peninsula overwhelmed the besieged American forces. He fought alongside the Marines on the fortress-island of Corregidor, where American forces made their courageous last stand against the relentless Japanese invaders. After a brutal fight on Corregidor, he was captured and became a POW for three and a half years.

Earl Anderson used extraordinary willpower, ingenuity, and teamwork to survive starvation and systematic abuse in the infamous POW Camp Cabanatuan in the Philippines. He and his buddies continued their shared fight for survival when they were transferred by a Japanese “hell-ship” to Yokohama, Japan, where they were forced to work as slave labor in a shipyard. While POWs were dying all around them, Earl Anderson and his buddies never gave up and never surrendered. Willpower, teamwork, innovation, and luck enabled them to survive many life-threatening challenges in the deadly camps—and ultimately to endure the apocalyptic bombing raids on Yokohama and Tokyo.

About the Author

Shawn Davis is Earl Anderson’s great nephew. Shawn majored in English at a New England college and he is the co-author of the futuristic thriller, American Insurrection. Shawn’s father, Bill Davis, met Earl Anderson at a family event in April, 2005 and received a copy of his forty page memoir a short time later. Shawn read the riveting account and became intrigued with Earl’s heroic story of survival during his three and a half years as a prisoner in WW II Japanese P.O.W. camps. Shawn was inspired by his great uncle’s true-life experiences and wanted to help him tell his incredible story to a wider audience. Shawn lives in Massachusetts and works as a police lieutenant at a New England college.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book!, February 26, 2007
This review is from: Never Surrender: An American Navy Sailor’s Struggle For Survival in the Deadly Japanese P.O.W. Camps of WW II (Paperback)
Never Surrender is the most intense WW II book I have ever read. The fact that it was written in the first person by an actual survivor of the battles and the POW camps really brought the story home for me. The main character in the true life adventure is also the book's author. Sometimes he is on the periphery of battles and at other times he is right in the middle of it!

I was very surprised by the humor and wit of the POW survivor, Earl Anderson, who wrote the book. Many times, I found myself laughing at a hilarious anecdote told by the writer a moment before I was holding my breath as the writer's life was in danger. The writer uses the interesting technique of telling the story as if it is happening in the present. This brings an immediacy to the story that is not present in other WW II books. I was shocked and fascinated as the story unfolded. The writer's personal experiences reveal truths about the Philippines battles and the Japanese POW camps that I never knew about before. This book is an entertaining adventure story as well as a harrowing tale of survival. I would recommend this book to anyone and not just to those people interested in WW II.

5.0 out of 5 stars Never Surrender, July 27, 2009

This review is from: Never Surrender: An American Navy Sailor’s Struggle For Survival in the Deadly Japanese P.O.W. Camps of WW II (Paperback)
I knew I'd like this book from reading Shawn's other works, but it went beyond my expectations. I learned so much more about the Japanese involvement in the Pacific Theatre of WW II. The first-hand horror experienced by Great Uncle Earl and others was mind boggling and brought goose bumps galore with its inside view of the hell of war. I've already recommended this book to others. It's well-written and brings the reality of being a POW to the forefront, never to be forgotten. I'm amazed any of them made it out alive after years of starvation and torture.

Definitely a must read.
