Book Description

May 1, 2004
The nuclear deterrent had failed
While Britain had an arsenal of terrifying weapons that it dared not use, the other side only needed to use theirs once. When a Russian Scragg missile hit Bristol, Britain knew it was all over. There were some people who accepted the armistice and occupying forces without opposition, believing they were working for a better society. But for the others, the Resistance, there was never been any question of compromise.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

It's a frightening time in Egleton's alternative London: a Russian missile has hit Britain, and the Russians have taken over the government. A resistance movement combats the usurpers, but for every act of opposition, the Russians exact a terrible price in human lives. When resistance-member Pollard assassinates the minister of internal security and then is captured, his colleagues know they're in severe danger. Garnett is assigned to rescue Pollard; if that fails, he is to kill Pollard before the Russians force him to talk. As with all good espionage thrillers, this one boasts plenty of spy tricks and skullduggery, all of which build to a whiz-bang conclusion. That said, this is a bit of a weak effort from the usually reliable Egleton. In addition to the somewhat implausible story line (he never really sells the premise), the plot doesn't quite gel, and it's difficult to engage with the characters. Still, Egleton is almost a brand name in the field, and many libraries will want his complete oeuvre. Emily Melton
