5.0 out of 5 stars Under-Rated...This is not 'Neverwinter Nights', nor is it 'Dungeon Siege'......
I've read a few reviews on this game across the WEB before i purchased it and i have to say, in my OPINION (and it's my opinion only) that this game got some unfair ratings right out of the starting gate. First of all, if your'e looking for another 'Neverwinter Night's' or 'Dungeon Siege' clone...keep looking. This game has a completely different (yet OLD STYLE)...

This review is from: NeverEnd (CD-ROM)
As a long time RPG fan, I found this game great. It reminded me of many great games I had played in the past. The graphics are sub-par to the current standards, but the gameplay is fun. Unfortunately, I must recommend everyone away from this game simply due to the number of bugs. Yes, there are the crash-to-windows bugs, the plot-necessary items not showing up correctly, and so forth, but more than that are the game killers. I played for about an hour and a half building my character and exploring the game only to have all my saves (from about the last 30 minutes) become corrupt, twice. I checked for patches, but the US version is considered up to date and all patches are for earlier European versions. Actually, only the german version can apply the latest patch, which came out early in 2006. After tranlating and attempting to read work-arounds to the several known game killing bugs in the German forums, I gave it another shot. Yet even following all the listed advice, my saved game were corrupted. Hence, a long rant about a fun, but not really playable game.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good concept, but implementation falls flat, November 14, 2006
= Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: NeverEnd (CD-ROM)
I bought this game based solely on the description on the box. I expected a game that had a trailing camera with good graphics, interesting combat, and an engaging storyline. I came away disappointed.

The most disappointing aspect of the game is the combat engine. Instead of a realtime hand-to-hand combat system, combat is turn-based. This in itself is not a problem. However, when engaged in combat, the participants run forward, take a swing, and run back. They take turns doing this until someone drops. The whole scenario comes across almost like a game of turn-based bumper cars.

Another issue with combat is the unexpected encounters that occur. In the opening stages of the game, the character must wander about in the woods, and very frequently the travel is interrupted by a message to prepare for combat. Often, that there are enemies nearby is a surprise as they do not show until the battle is joined. This kind of encounter occurs throughout the game.

Combat is often imbalanced as well. It is too easy to die.

The dialog options are somewhat uninspired as well, and the main character frequently talks to herself when trying to interact with inanimate objects. This is disconcerting, if nothing else.

There are good and bad aspects to the graphics. The graphics engine itself is good, and the rendered graphical images are very pretty and inspiring. There is plenty of eye candy in this game for those that like pretty graphics and lots of detail. However, one aspect of the graphics that is frustrating is the changing camera perspective. It switches automatically from a side view to a top-down view depending on area transitions, and in the top-down view it is difficult to tell where the player is going and what is in the surrounding area.

The storyline itself is engaging, and the developer did a nice job with it. Some of the side quests leave much to be desired, though, so it is a mixed bag in terms of gameplay.

If I had to compare it to other games in the same general genre, I would describe it as a hybrid mix between Dungeon Siege and Arcanum. Unfortunately it borrows a little too heavily from Arcanum's pitfalls.

I came away disappointed with this title. It has some good ideas and concepts that have been incorporated into it, but the implementation of those ideas make it less than ideal. Some players may find this game to be a refreshing change from 1st-person style gaming, but I found it to be clunky and awkward. I would recommend this title only to those who want to explore the storyline and are not too concerned about the implementation.

This game has a completely different (yet OLD STYLE) turned-based combat system...sort of like playing a console RPG on the PC. If you enjoy console RPG's ( as i do), you'll enjoy this game and the latter won't bother you in the least bit. The graphics are nicely done and the story-although not top notch, but it's original, which is a breath of fresh air in these days. Let's face it PC RPG's with an original storyline is a rarity, especially with game companies each trying to out-do each other to see just how much Graphic power they can crunch out and making the story an after-thought. With the exception being games such as Morrowind-"Oblivion"...Oh course, but games like 'Oblivion' are too far and in between. Then why only 4STARS as an over-all rating? Well, just like the many other games that are created by companies such as this, it has it's MANY bugs. Over-seas game developers have always had there problems when trying to convert certain aspects of coding to run on U.S PC's,this goes all the way back to the OLD-'DOS' Days. But besides that and the fact that the controls are a wee bit slow in responding (this can get fustrating in the beginning), the game has some pretty playable and good qualities that will keep your intrest.I haven't downloaded the U.S patch for this game yet (I'M about half way thru it according to the faq i got from [...]), but i advise anyone who buys this game to go to [...] and link up to download the patch. I'm playing this one of my old PC's-a Dell Dimen.2400 w/ 1GB Ram-VisionTek Raedeon 9250 80gb HD and it plays fine. I dare not play certain games on my High-End PC due to bugs in certain games so i test them out first on the Dell. Any-Hoo,until ('NEVERWINTER NIGHTS 2','GOTHIC 3'&Might and Magic-'Dark Messiah'), try this one out. If anthing,it's original. F.Y.I-There is no official strategy guide for this game on any site that I've checked- so go to [...]. No strategy guide for a brand new game....WHAT'S UP WITH THAT?????-Darvius9

2.0 out of 5 stars Crashes almost as much as it plays, March 9, 2007
= Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: NeverEnd (CD-ROM)
The game is good and I have patched it already but it still crashes back to windows so if you do play it save often, like after every battle. The graphics are ok but not great and the storyline is very good. I really doubt you will ever finish the game though as the crashes get boring after a while. But the price was right for this game and when it plays, it plays well.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Okay., April 1, 2007
= Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: NeverEnd (CD-ROM)
I went through this entire game, it was quite good. It starts off slow, and hits a few low points, but it picks it self back up, and gets the ball rolling towars the middle. Some of the first half is very confusing, and most of it is by your self, however, this will get you very good, very fast. The music gets a 5/5, because its ambient and has a nice effect through-out the game, the voice acting is terrible except for the main character and a few characters here and there. Graphics get a 3/5; they are probably about as good as some recent ps2 3d games, but nothing spectacular. Gameplay gets a 3/5 because its so slow at first. And your gernerally confused through the beggining. However it gets better with its Time Based System, and quickly becomes a stray and play game for any hard core to moderate player.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not what you'd expect, December 28, 2006
= Fun:2.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: NeverEnd (CD-ROM)
I purchased this game as a "waste a little time" game while traveling.
I immediately got a bad vibe when the install disc told me to insert disc 2 and then, quickly said I had the wrong disc in and I needed disc 1.
Once it installs, you are asked if you want to remap your keys (since a mouse is useless). I remapped the keys and it gave me an error screen, disregarded my personal settings, and defaulted back to it's original settings.
YOU CAN NOT REMAP KEYS ONCE YOU PLAY THE GAME. If you remap the keys on your next load, then start the game, your saves are lost.
YES, This is a BUGGY game. The European to AMerican English translation is a bit off as well. Voice acting is somewhat annoying too.
3-4 years ago, this would have been a great game.
Here is an example of the poor balance in gameplay.
You will see a monk on the map and approach him. He has 24 HP and you kill him pretty easily. You walk a few minutes and encounter another monk. This one is level 11 and has 150 HP and kills you with 2 hits before you can escape (run away from) the encounter.

I am a writer and was planning on submitting a story to Dreamcatcher but I have been frequently let down by the quality of their games. They are usually good-great stories with bad game graphics or controls.
SAVE FREQUENTLY!!!
I only reccommend this for people with older computers that have lots of patience.

I am partway thru this and may give up soon. This is only because I need to finish Oblivion and start Dark Messiah.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice little fun game hurt by bugs, December 28, 2006
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: NeverEnd (CD-ROM)
What you get in the box: Game CDs, CD sleeves, game map and a game book.

The kind of game: RPG with Adventure elements.

Graphics: The graphics are not up to speed with lots of other new games, but the graphics are nice to look at. Expect dated graphics, but nothing I can't personally handle. Good news is you can play this game on an older computer without problems.

Sound/Music: While I enjoy the sound and music in this game, it's quality varies during the game, from pretty good at times to just downright bad. The voices in the game sound nice to me, some accents are kind of funny to hear, but the main characters voice is nice on the ears. Every dialog in the game is spoken too. I really like the music in this game. Don't expect great tunes you'll be humming around, but the music is nice enough.

Control: This game can play a lot like an adventure game. Think King's Quest and other similar ones. You control a fairy with broken wings(that's just awesome). You move your main character around like in other adventure games. The view of your character can change from one place to the next. You have objects you can pick up and use on other things to solve a puzzle. You also have your main character who you level up with experience points from solving quests and killing bad guys. It's your typical type of RPG element, with a few "different" things.

Linear/Non-linear: The game is pretty linear, however you can choose to do things differently from the next person. For example, you can either make someone a friend, or kill them. When you talk to someone, you get several responses you can choose from. Some responses might be nice, others might be mean. The games story pretty much appears to be linear though.

Combat: The combat is pretty much like Final Fantasy. Combat is purely turn based, but you have a timer that counts down. How it works, is that you pick a combat move, or a spell, and wait for the timer to countdown before your character attacks the bad guys with it. Each move is different, and you can be faster depending on how "fast" your character is. You can "recruit" NPC's to join you, so you have more than one character in your party fighting. I find combat pretty fun. I was always a fan of turn based combat. No complaints in the combat part.

Storyline: Can't say much so not to spoil anything. But the story is something interesting enough, and I find it has it's charm that appeals to me. You are a young female fairy with broken wings, who just happens to be a pirate. Since this happens in the beginning, it won't spoil anything. You basically are a pirate with a crew. During the night, some other pirates take the gold, and your necklace. So your journey starts from there to find it.

My opinion: This is a wonderful game with a wonderful story. I am an old school PC gamer, who has been playing games since Zork. This game somehow takes me back to the older games, it really has a charm to it. The main thing about the game, is that I find it fun. It's a game that I am going to keep, and play at a later time. Hopefully a patch will be released for the game.

The only thing bad about this game in my eyes, is that it has game breaking bugs in it. They can be avoided easily enough though. For example, there is a bug where if you visit the tavern in Mildrew while the tobacco guy is in there BEFORE you get to the swamp, then an unfixable game breaking bug will occur. But if you wait to visit the tavern till after you get to the swamp, then you are okay. Yes, it is very bad, as I ended up getting this game crashing bug. What happens if this occurs, is every time you talk to this guy at the swamp, the game will crash every time.

That is the only bug I have encountered myself. Other than that bug and a few random crashes I experienced, the game ran well.

If you can get past the one big bug I experienced and maybe some other bugs I don't know about, and probably some crashes, I'd recommend this game if it sounds interesting to you. If you are wary, but still want the game, waiting for a patch would be a good thing to do. Good news is that the bug(s) are avoidable. Just don't get that one I got.

Great fun game hurt by some nasty bugs.

I could not make it through 15 minutes of play on this game ever for the 6 dollars it was not worth it. I have been playing computer games since the early 80's and this has got to be one of the worse 3 games I have ever played. Beware this one.

1.0 out of 5 stars DO NOT PURCHASE, May 6, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

I purchased this gane recently. I thought it was a great deal, seeing as how it only cost around -30 cents-. I saw the low price and was in the middle of another order of a few other games, so I threw this one in with the order with a "Eh, why not, whats the worst that could happen?" How wrong I was. This game implements some of the worst coding I have -ever- seen, with hundreds of glitches, bugs, and other problems. I have never been so disgusted with any videogame ever. I played 15 minutes into this game, and after three crashes, just quit and uninstalled it. This is the first (and probably last) time in my life I have ever have bought something for less than fifty cents and wanted my money back for it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Had potential three years ago, September 29, 2009
= Fun:2.0 out of 5 stars

This review is from: NeverEnd (CD-ROM)
This game had some potential but it dies after a few hours of play because of things that should not be. It has a decent story, and if you like an old style rpg, it starts out feeling OK. But it soon deteriorates.

1) it is turn based combat. Now I am an old fallout fan so I like a good turn based combat game but this combat system is pretty dull. You have no control over your character. Everyone stands around and takes their shots. Last man standing wins. No using cover, no combo creations you can create, etc.

2) the spell system is not intuitive at all. Indeed I played the first 10 hours without understanding how to make or cast a spell because I could not figure it out and the game guide for the US version is horrid. After HASTE spell was used against me in combat I decided there was at least one spell worth knowing so I went online to get instructions.

3) at first random battles are OK to have but after a while you get tired of them. There is a level up issue too. As you level up, killing known monster types does not get easier because they level up with you. If you level up too much in the early game beacuse you are fighting all the battles, then you end up in an impossible situation because you cannot win any more battles. Your opponents are the same level as you but they have great spells and armor and weapons and skill points, and you do not because you have not made it to that part of the game yet where this stuff is available so you loose. Indeeed, the advice online is not to fight any battles (yes do not fight ANY random encounters) in the begining and concentrate on quests as your level up scheme or else you will fall into this trap. Gee? what kind of fighting RPG game has players recommending not fighting?

4) Graphics look good in the adds but it is deceptive. They are not that great for most of the game areas.

5) there is no map system I can see so you cannot figure out where to go for stuff and you have no control over camera angle. Both these are very anoyying. Of course if you cannot move around during battle then why bother with camera angle eh...

It might have been a good game when it first came out but it is not worth the time you will put into it now when you have other choices like THE WITCHER at your disposal.

Hail Flavius
