Corben at his best,
By wiredweird "wiredweird" (Earth, or somewhere nearby) - See all my reviews (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER) (TOP 500 REVIEWER)
This review is from: Neverwhere. (Paperback)
This is Corben, straight up. The men are richly muscled, women richly busted, and everyone is oddly hairless. You can hardly throw a rock without hitting an evil queen, deformed hench-being, traitorous wizard, or eldritch godling. There's plenty of graphic fighting, and a bit of un-graphic coupling of the male and female leads.
It's a fantasy romp, cast as a teen-boy escapist fantasy come to life (which may explain why relations with women become vague at crucial moments). There's a loose bit of continuity with the 70s animated film, 'Heavy Metal,' but it stands well on its own. There are no grand themes here, or deep statements. There is adventure, excitement, and Corben's iconic art. That's enough for me. //wiredweird PS: Neil Gaiman's use of the Neverwhere title, 20 years later, is completely unrelated. As much as I like Gaiman's work, I wish he had chosen a title of his own. |
