The haunting of Sherlock Holmes

Exactly as broadcast on May 20, 1946

"It's the first time in my career that i've ever had a ghost for a client!" exclaims Sherlock Holmes. On a holiday in a small Balkan country, Holmes and Watson observe the execution of the beautiful opera singer, Lilly Rhena, who was accused of spying. Yet shortly after her demise, she visits the detective and his companion in their hotel suite. Can Holmes and Watson unravel the mystery without putting their own lives in peril?

THE BACONIAN CIPHER

Exactly as broadcast on May 27, 1946

A TYPOGRAPHICAL ERROR OR A MESSAGE OF MURDER? Holmes detects a strange message in the "Agony Column" of the London Times. With the help of Dr. Watson and a French detective, Sherlock Holmes is led into a curious plot of murder and intrigue. This is the last appearance of Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce together as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson on the radio.

The Haunting of Sherlock Holmes and The Baconian Cipher were broadcast over the Mutual Broadcasting System on May 20, 1946 and May 27, 1946 respectively. For more than forty years these episodes were believed lost until 1987, when the Los Angeles group 221 "A" Baker Street Associates announced their discovery. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's daughter, Dame Jean Conan Doyle, graciously granted permission for a re-release of the shows, and the latest audio technology was employed to bring the best possible audio quality and fidelity to the original performances. The Haunting of Sherlock Holmes and The Baconian Cipher were written by the prolific radio writing team of Anthony Boucher and Denis Green and star Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce.

About the Author

When Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce were chosen to play Holmes and Watson in the 1939 film "The Hound of the Baskervilles," no one realized that they would be forever linked with the characters of the great detective and his loyal friend. The immediate success of the film led to their being chosen to portray Holmes and Watson on the radio for 8 years in 213 episodes of the Sherlock Holmes mysteries.
