I have recently become a fan of this band. I started with Louder Now, and worked my way backwards toward their earlier stuff. There are only a handful of songs in their catalog that I don't like. So, I preordered this album expecting the same great song writing and musical talent. I have to say that I was not blown away. I tried to listen to the whole album, but had to skip a couple of songs. I set it aside and went back to the stuff that I had become so used to and loved so much.
Then something amazing happened... I put my mp3 player (don't want to plug any one brand)on shuffle all, and this awesome song started to play. I said "who is this?" only to find out that it was the TBS album I had tossed to the side. I stopped the randomness and went directly to this album. It turns out I was too quick to judge. This is a very good album. Right now I still prefer the older stuff, but I catch myself singing "Sink into me" "New Again" and "Where my mouth is" randomly. -IF YOU ARE NOT INTERESTED IN MY STORY, HERE IS THE MEAT AND POTATOES: This is a more mature album. The songwriting has grown up a bit and TBS succeeds at making a solid album. If you are looking for the old sound, purchase with caution. If you are open minded to good music, give this album a chance. It has some catchy songs that you will be singing to yourself without knowing it. Clean Production Great Sound Quality Songwriting

Better POWERPOP direction...shoddy packaging...OUCH!!,

Well, being from Long Island, these guys have always been written about heavily in these parts...they're from Rockville Center...and when their debut album was out, I bought it to see what the fuss was about and I HATED IT...because I hated the emo crap that was shoved down my throat, ugh!! And that album was the epitome of that sound. I then avoided that whole scene...tried "Louder Now", thinking things would be different, nope.
Then, something happened...Adam appeared on Cyndi Lauper's "The Body Acoustic" on a cool "Love Changes Everything", the whole emo thing imploded and certain bands from that scene somehow sounded better without that "emo" tag...not emo at all...I really love Fall Out Boy, who are basically smart powerpop!!! Then TBS changed their lineup, and had a song on that Warner Bros tribute album called "Covered", doing Tom Petty's "You Wreck Me", love that song, pretty cool cover!!! Now, they have powerpop producer David Kahn as their new producer, as he worked with cool people like Paul McCartney, the Bangles and Regina Spektor and more. I like the new song "Sink Into Me"...it's powerpop!!! Catchier and lotsa harmonies and handclaps...maybe their older material will sound better to me as well??? The album got an A in both Newsday and Entertainment Weekly. Who knows...weirder things have happened. Bad news tho...I got the deluxe edition and the packaging is HORRIBLE!!! The DVD is in the tray, but the CD is in the cardboard sleeve, on top of the enclosed booklet!!! What were the Warner folks thinking??? It shoulda been a double digipack or something...knocked a notch for that...better music tho at least...OUCH!! |
