Book Description

January 4, 1998
Completely revised, updated, and expanded, The New Age Baby Name Book is the quirky naming guide that has outlasted the trendiness of New Age. Now at 512 pages, with 10,000 new names for a total of 20,000, with over 125 new sidebars filled with naming rites, stories, trends, and reverse trends, cultural trivia, and quotes, it is the definitive resource for parents who wish to celebrate their child's life with a very special name, right from the outset.

Classic, popular, offbeat, and even gender-neutral, the entries are culled from dozens of cultures and traditions, and include pronunciation guides, meanings, and variations. Here are Native American names, Gaelic names, Swahili names, Arabic names, native Hawaiian names. There are Hebrew names and modern Israeli names, Old Welsh, Middle English, and contemporary Anglicized names. And for parents who wish to create an original name for their child, 12 delightful techniques--from anagrams (get out the Scrabble board) to telescoping from trends and respellings--for coming up with that perfect, one-of-a-kind name. In addition, readers discover naming practices from around the world, the psychology of names, which names sound the most educated and which the least, occupation names, power names for women, and more.

140,000 copies in print.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wish I'd Found This One First!!!, February 9, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The New Age Baby Name Book: 3rd Edition: Completely Revised (Paperback)
As a college teacher, I found this book extremely intelligent, well-researched and beautifully written. But most of all, it was a sheer pleasure to read. I bought three other name books, but this one was definitely the most fun. Don't let the "new age" title confuse you. The author defines the new age as a much-hoped-for time when prejudice and fear will at last melt away and we'll all live together in peace and harmony. A beautiful thought, a beautiful book. Highly recommended!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars WHAT FUN!!!, March 11, 1999
By A Customer

Lots of great names from all over the world. This book has a real "internet" feel about it. It has all the timeless classics like Sarah, Emily, Joshua and Austin. Plus tons of appealing new names I hadn't thought of. I found the no-angst chapter on the psychology of naming my baby especially reassuring, and the section on the best ways to create a name was a blast!!

5.0 out of 5 stars REALLY PRETTY, A GREAT GIFT, July 30, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The New Age Baby Name Book: 3rd Edition: Completely Revised (Paperback)
A really pretty baby name book. I'm talking here about the yellow book with the Mary Engelbreit cover; I see this book has a number of versions. But the one I bought was just gorgeous. It's full of great names and has lots of lovely boxes packed with intriguing trivia. Apparently, when this book was first published in the 70s, it was the only baby name book to contain unusual names in addition to Mary and John. My mother still has one of the original copies (she named me with it!),but in my opinion this latest edition is even better. A timeless classic.
