This review is from: New Age Short Stories: A Collection (Paperback)
Some of the books by Dick Sutphen are very interesting, but I found this one neither uplifting, nor thought-provoking. The grammar could have been better edited by a high-school freshman honor student. Some of the writing, along with the editing, was so bad, that it was difficult to determine who owned what dialogue. This along with unfinished sentences, made for a slow-reading book. As for the non-fictional characters in the stories, I found myself siding with the spiritually agnostic ones, simply because some of the spiritual seekers in the stories, I found to be ignorant or out of touch with reality. The second story is especially disturbing. It relates to a new age, spiritual commune leader, aka Brother John, who preaches interests towards spiritual attainment for those who pay good money to stay at his religious wonderland. Spiritual attainment I can see, but for this Brother John to try to convince his guests into having sexual intercourse with he and his staff, just falls way short of any uplifting messages, like you would expect from a book about New Age short stories. I would rather recommend a book like 'Hot Chocolate for the Soul', or 'Chicken Soup for the Soul' or the slightly controversial 'A New Day is Dawning', a modern-day message from Jesus, is very uplifting and surprisingly re-opened my heart and mind to the Christian "faith". Mr Sutphen's book, `You Were Born Again to Be Together', was a fascinating book transcribing first-person dialogue of couples' past-life regressions, but it is unfortunately no longer in print.
