1.0 out of 5 stars Brief - to the point of being Useless, December 21, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The New American Commentary Volume 27 - Romans (Hardcover)
I just received this commentary from Amazon. I was surprised that it is so small - 283 pages. I should have paid closer attention. What was I thinking? I should not have bought this. Some authors can say a lot in a few words, but this is not the case here. I might be happy if it were succinct or concise and to the point. I mean 11 pages on Romans 6, you got to be kidding. I just read the 14 pages on chapter 5. Seriously!!!! You get nothing. So I skipped over to chapter 7 and read the 10 or 11 pages on that chapter. You get nothing from this commentary. I have never seen any commentary more senseless. This is just bizarre. The text of Romans is also printed in this commentary, which means you get even less commentary.

I have never been so disappointed with a commentary in my life. The only good thing about this commentary being so short is that you won't have to waste a lot of your time reading the nothing it has to say. Don't believe me? Buy it and get the disappointment of your life. Or buy a real commentary on Romans. There are many good ones out there.

I will have to be more careful when buying commentaries. I generally like the NAC series and had expected more from them. I mean, they do have some good commentaries. Before you buy this commentary, do your homework. There are many good commentaries on Romans you have to choose from. This was a waste of $20.00. I am sick.

3.0 out of 5 stars Average, February 3, 2011
This review is from: The New American Commentary Volume 27 - Romans (Hardcover)
This is an average commentary of Romans. It's not as exegetical, linguistic, and precise as I would like. I agree with a previous comment that it is a bit too short for a book of such theological magnitude like Romans. It gives you some of the primary elements to the flow of thought by the Apostle Paul, but leaves much to be desired for the pastor/teacher/professor. I'm not recommending against it. If you are just looking for a basic commentary for Romans, it might be suitable. If you are looking for a devotional style, go with John Stott or John MacArthur. If you're looking for pastoral use, check out Moo or Schreiner, and if you want a boatload of Historic and background information as well as a magnitude of linguistics, you might want to check out Jewett.

5.0 out of 5 stars The solution to life foy any person who wants to find it, June 2, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The New American Commentary Volume 27 - Romans (Hardcover)
Romans, of course, is the most important book of the bible. It tells what the solution to life consists of and how a person can solve it. First, it is an act of God who wants any person to find and enjoy Him forever. Then, it is tha acceptance of that act by the person who wants to get involved with God.

Now, the book is elusively deceptive. It builds on simple sentences, but that is the whole thing: a simple statement can have very deep consequences and you are going to find that in a great number of instances.

It has a lot of footnotes and then you may want to use them in your spare time to investigate the matter further. And that exercise might lead you in all kinds of directions!

So, there is this first impression and then you are led to heavy thinking. After a while you like the book a lot.
