The Palisades Virtuosi has been creating new works since 2003 when their first commission, Lep-i-dop-ter-o-lo-gy by Aaron Grad, premiered in Ridgewood, NJ. Over the past nine seasons they have premiered a new work on each of their concerts, by both prize-winning and younger composers. Their Mission to Commission has expanded the repertoire for flute, clarinet & piano with the creation of more than 50 new works of music! There are seven works on this fourth disc of commissioned works, each one different in character and style. There is the impassioned Statements of Joseph Turrin, the dreamy landscape of Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Melinda Wagner's Thumbnail Moon, the fresh and poignant characters of Amanda Harberg's Birding in the Palisades, the clear strains of Gwyneth Walker's Full Circle and contrasting with these, the minimalist brilliance of Ryan Francis' Trio, Sunbin Kim's spiky Whirlwind and the rich brooding sonorities of Matthew Halper's Trio. Two of the works on this disc make use of the formidable Marni Nixon who joins the group to narrate the poems that precede each movement of the works by Gwyneth Walker and Amanda Harberg. Palisades Virtuosi consists of the virtuoso musicians Margaret Swinchoski, flute, Donald Mokrynski, clarinet and Ron Levy, piano. The ensemble has received rave reviews for its previous three releases of New American Masters on Albany Records.
