Book Description

May 1, 2001 New American
The perfect pool has arrived! The New American Swimming Pool provides 40 dazzling case studies of what's hot and what's not in swimming pool design today.

Say goodbye to the kidney-shaped and rectangular pools with concrete borders that have dotted the suburban landscape over the past few decades. The New American Swimming Pool reveals what is fresh, new, and exciting in swimming pool design today.

This fascinating guide demonstrates how today's swimming pool can be a dazzling visual focal point, or designed so it seems to be a natural part of the surrounding landscape. Each case study includes a dramatic one and one-half page full-color photograph showing the pool and its setting, as well as a portfolio of smaller color illustrations and easy-to-follow plans, siting details, and information on materials and construction methods. Every stunning layout in The New American Swimming Pool is ready to foster the dreams of architects, designers, and homeowners alike of diving right into the ultimate pool.

“In The New American Swimming Pool, editor James Grayson Truelove carefully surveys 40 particularly striking forms—urban, suburban, oceanside and country—to isolate swimming pools' aesthetic and functional elements. Waterfalls, rock gardens, modernist geometries, dramatic illumination, tiling and terracing are all deployed. With its site plans, lists of materials and more than 300 color photos, the book will make a valuable reference for architects, landscape architects and homeowners.”—Publishers Weekly, April 30, 2001

“...is an ideal arm-chair guide for those yearning for a high-end built-in model, even if your desire is merely a pipe dream.”—Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, May 2001

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Trulove ventures outside books like his The New American House in search of striking and innovative swimming pools created by today's cutting-edge landscape designers and architects. Forty "case-study" pools, each lovingly profiled in color photos, site plans, and elevations, shimmer enticingly on the glossy pages of this large-format volume. The predominant aesthetic is luxurious but understated, drawing inspiration variously from the International Style, Postmodernism, local design traditions, and historic revivals. Trulove confides that these extraordinary pools, gracing exclusive properties in Malibu, Martha's Vineyard, Scottsdale, and Key West, cost "significantly more" than the average 16' 32' backyard pool. Libraries serving homeowners with limited budgets should stick to handbooks like Jim McRea's Swimming Pools and Spas (Sunset, 1998) and Tom Griffiths's The Swimming Pool Book (S. & S., 1995). This volume is recommended for architecture and landscape design libraries, but it will undoubtedly find a happy home wherever readers fantasize about the good life. David Solt sz, Cuyahoga Cty. 5.0 out of 5 stars The best book out!, September 21, 2003
This review is from: The New American Swimming Pool: Innovations in Design and Construction: 40 Case Studies (Paperback)
Not just great photos and ideas. This book give details on all the pools, including geographical location, size, depth, color of plaster, type of coping and decking/terrace, etc. Although there are a lot of great books out with wonderful pictures, this one doesn't have all tropical pools, which is nice for those of us who don't have a jungle of palms! Very nice designs for those who live in temperate climates or with more traditional yards/homes. Best pool book yet.

I think the book's inside cover is close to correct...

"Lavishly prodiced, The New American Swimming Pool is an invaluable and practical refernce book [Pool Owner - maybe not practical]. It is a fresh, important source of inspiration for architecture and landscape architecture enthusiasts, homeowners, architects, landscape architects, landscape designers, and pool contractors."
