Classic cooking from a classic cooking school,
By A Customer
This review is from: The New Antoinette Pope School Cookbook (Hardcover)
Growing up in Chicago, home of the Pope cooking school, I usedto read my mother's copy of Pope's cookbook while lying under thecoffee table, watching TV, dreaming of being Mary Richards and serving hot canapes and party dips. My sister got a copy of it for her wedding shower in 1969; when she couldn't find a copy of it for me in the late 1980s, she purposefully xeroxed every chapter (except "Appetizers") on 3-hole punch paper and gave me the copy in a binder as an apartment-warming present. I *finally* found a copy of my very own in a used bookstore in Bethesda, MD (the young bride to whom it was inscribed was obviously not a cook; the pages were pristine and the spine wasn't cracked). Maybe my love of this particular cookbook is based in emotion and memory. Maybe it's grounded in the range of recipes (from Swedish meatballs to pastry) and the simple communication of basic cooking techniques. Pope's style is classier than Betty Crocker, but not as high-falooting as Julia Child.

The best cookbook ever,

This cookbook has all the basics and all the classics. My mother's copy has been used so much it has fallen apart into many peices. A well loved treasure at our house.

This cookbook has been passed on for 3 generations in my family and built the foundation for a fabulous appreciation of eating. It will serve as the building blocks for developing culinary instincts in my own children.

family favorites!,

This review is from: The New Antoinette Pope School Cookbook (Hardcover)
This book has some wonderful recipes and if one looks, there are some superb low-fat recipes such as basic spaghetti sauce. The recipes are from an era before cholesterol, when food was graded entirely on taste, texture, and to a lesser extent, presentation. One of our favorites is the fried buttermilk doughnuts. A wonderful treat that is just heavenly with coffee. If one can find a copy of this book, buy it! Your tastebuds will thank you forever! I have shared a few of the recipes with friends, and everyone loves them.

I put this on a wish list since I couldn't find it anywhere and was amazed to find it here. All of my family, grandmas and aunts have and use recipes from here all the time. It is like their secret cook book. I have had plenty of breads and desserts from this but can't tell you which is my favorite. All of them are delicious. It has great tips all through out the book and is organized so you find what your looking for quick. It has a lot of the ethnic favorites as well. Also, great classics of the foods I grew up on. I can't wait to start trying them all out.

Best All Around Cookbook,

This review is from: The New Antoinette Pope School Cookbook (Hardcover)
The was the first cookbook I received and learned from and it has turned out to be one of my all time favorites. I received this book in the early 70s and "cut my cooks teeth" on it. Since then, I have graduated from culinary school -- and I still refer back to this worn and much-loved text. The first copy I have literally worn out -- I am now on my second copy! I consider this book to be a MUST HAVE for every kitchen.

Antoinette Pope,
This review is from: The New Antoinette Pope School Cookbook (Hardcover)
My family and I have been trying to track down as many copies of the cookbook as we can. Antoinette Pope was my Great Aunt. She is my grandmothers sister. Just reading the comments that people have written about my great aunt, is so wonderful. I grew up learning how to cook out of her book. To all of you, who have this amazing cookbook, cherish it and continue to pass on her recipes to your loved ones.

Great recipe collection,
This review is from: The New Antoinette Pope School Cookbook (Hardcover)
My mother had this book in the 1950s and made many wonderful meals from it. I got my own copy in 1970 when I got married. What's amazing is that often when I'd have a great meal at someone else's home and get the recipe, I'd look it up in the Pope cookbook and would find it there. I was introduced to things like Sweet and Sour Pork, Chicken Cacciatore, and Egg Foo Yong, which were recipes that my mother never made. The desserts and quick breads are wonderful. My mother used the turkey recipes for preparing Thanksgiving dinner. The recipes are foolproof and in most cases straight forward.

I was thrilled to have a new copy of an old friend. I sadly tossed the tattered pages of my mother's copy, which had long ago lost its cover and end pages, once my new copy arrived. As many other reviewers have stated, we grew up on these recipes and the television program.

My Favorite Cookbook,

I grew up in the Chicago area, and my Mom watched the Antoinette and Francois Pope cooking show. I have her copy of the book, and I still use a lot of the recipes. I highly recommend this book for anyone. I was 15 when I started cooking and this quickly became my bible. Most of the every day food I prepare is based on a recipe from this book. It also prodded me to take on Julia Child's "Mastering the Art..." Now I can tackle just about anything, if I have the time!
