I'm a professional astrologer/card reader and have been for 20 years. I read this book when it first came out and slowly integrated a tiny bit of its info into my readings. Now, 15 years later, I begin every reading with "What is your date of birth?" When my client says August, 1960 and then tells me her boyfriend was born in February, 1954 I know instantly that she's a Rat and he's a Horse, two of the most incompatible signs ever to lay thier heads on the same pillow. And when Ms. Rat goes on to describe how selfish Mr. Horse is and tells me how she lays awake at night chewing her nails because he borrowed her car and her insurance bill is two days late, well. . . I can help her see that it isn't him or her, it's the connection. Because of what I've learned from this book, I know to steer her toward an easier, less stressful alliance with an equally nervous Monkey or a powerful, protective Dragon.
It is nothing less than a FACT that Suzanne White SINGLE HANDEDLY popularized Chinese Astrology in America. Other authors (90% of whom made it to the bookshelf in her wake) may describe the topic in more depth, but they certainly haven't made Chinese Astrology easier to understand nor have they made it easier to apply to life. I know. I've read every book published on the subject and there is none better than Suzanne White's glorious, orginal, powerful New Astrology. Buy it and grow wiser.

5.0 out of 5 stars WARNING! WARNING! WARNING!, March 3, 2000
This review is from: The New Astrology: A Unique Synthesis of the World's Two Great Astrological Systems: The Chinese and Western (Paperback)
This really is the only astrology book you will ever need. I would give it a 10 out of 10 with all other books falling to a 5 or below in accuracy. I read my mother's horoscope to her and her hair seemed to go straight up in the air. After reading a couple to my brother, he went around goggled-eyed for several days. This woman must have a crystal ball! It's weird. She states that I never get out of the house. Not true! I did about a week ago. She says that I have a self-deprecatory sense of humor! NOT TRUE! (lol, huccup, grimace, brb). It is so weird that this is not really an astrology book. It's more a book of Unknown Facts. If you are a kreep like myself, you will want to buy it and get the "goods" on everybody. Just don't look at yours! Mine said I could be vicious at times! Not True. Only when I write reviews for Amazon.com. Buy the book if you want the goods on EVERYBODY. Then hide it somewhere. Good luck. You will need it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The definitive guide on getting to know someone quick, June 25, 2003

This review is from: The New Astrology: A Unique Synthesis of the World's Two Great Astrological Systems: The Chinese and Western (Paperback)
I have often read this book after getting to know someone and have been amazed at how close it was...then kicked myself for not reading up on the person before I got too involved with them - could have saved me some rough roads maybe!

When I read mine, it was like someone looking over my shoulder and into my head. Kind of spooky really. I have found that sometimes a particular combination didn't fit, but it was usually if they were on a cusp and if I read their cusp sign with their Chinese sign, it was usually much closer or I could pick out traits in each.

There was some things in my own combo that weren't currently true but were in the past. Really an amazing book and Suzanne is really funny in her delivery of the information! It feels like she's sitting across from you chatting away. Makes it easy to read. She's obviously a very intelligent and witty. First writer I've ever wanted to actually meet.

3.0 out of 5 stars Informative, fun, and harsh., April 17, 2006

This review is from: The New Astrology: A Unique Synthesis of the World's Two Great Astrological Systems: The Chinese and Western (Paperback)
I enjoyed this book. It was fun to read about the combinations of east and western astrology and how it influences the characteristics and personalities of people. The reason I gave it 3 stars instead of 4 or 5 is because it is written in a harsh tone. The tone of the writing is angry. It sounds snappish, definite, and condescending. Most of the astrology books I have read are open, and have a lot of "sometimes" "occasionally" "tend to" writing in it. Most of the books I have read say that astrology does not work for everyone and not all of the characteristics for each sign will apply to each person. This book reads like every flaw that a sign has, will without a doubt be part of someone's personality. For example, a section in the book mentioned that if I were to have kids, they would want to get out of the house young, and never come back because of how controlling I would be. Also, I would find any reason to keep them home as long as I can and I would never want them to leave. I can't imagine doing that to a child.

It is an informative book, but there seems to be no grey area involving the characteristics of the signs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprise! Chinese/Western Zodiac fits a skeptic, June 21, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: The New Astrology: A Unique Synthesis of the World's Two Great Astrological Systems: The Chinese and Western (Paperback)
While looking for a referece book one day, I found a book of Chinese zodiac written by a Caucasian woman. "Hmmph," I thought, "What does she know about Chinese astrology! If other people's horescope fits my life, then she's an idiot." So I read, the year of the ox, pig, rat, tiger, dragon, and none of them fits mine. "Wow,it can't be." But it was, the year of the snake fits me almost perfectly. Since then, I'm a Suzanne White fan. My friends enjoy reading about themselves & about their spouse. The book is good in that: a) reveals your strength and weakness, b)demonstrates strength in one situation can be a weakness in the next (real life) c) shows the profession best suited to your friends and how many of them are actually in that profession, d)how the love, family, business, home, decoration, personality profiles fit you. The book probably works best if you read your horescope to your friends & family, "sometimes, one is not the best judge of self." Surprising this book even accurately points out friends who had a drug history. Simply put, this book nailed too many things down to be completely coincidental. Overall, this books is fun, informative, & insightful. Sincerely, Jenny Santo

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT FUN/VERSATILE/ACCURATE., November 27, 2002
This review is from: The New Astrology: A Unique Synthesis of the World's Two Great Astrological Systems: The Chinese and Western (Paperback)
Suzanne White's books always amuse me. Some find her writing style a bit on the egocentric side, but I enjoy her off-beat humour. This book is an especially desirable one to own for astrology buffs, because it covers two types in one package. Ingeniously, Suzanne has cleverly combined the East with the West astrology-wise: the results are sometimes striking & surprising but they are always entertaining. White's style of writing is more fun than scientific, which makes the reading experience enjoyable - for most people, anyway. Like Theadora Lao and the late Linda Goodman, Suzanne takes the reader by the hand and guides them with humourous personal observations and episodes, therefore making the reader feel completely at ease and sometimes captivated by the sheer cheekiness of her observations: she doesn't expect us to take astrology TOO seriously. Just a spiritual blueprint for the game of life.

This is a book people either love, or hate. I myself have studied astrology for years, and I adore this book. Apart from her bad habit of addressing the sign of the hare as "Cat," It's a refreshingly modern look at astrology. After browsing over a copy of her "New Chinese Astrology" at the library I work at, I had to run out and buy this book. 9 times out of 10, the accuracy is stunning. I spent weeks walking around and reading passages of this book out loud to every friend and family member who would listen. It was spot-on with everyone but my sister. In any group situation, it's a great way to start conversations! While the name-dropping is a bit annoying, it's entertaining to learn of all the celebrities born under the same signs (I was positivly giddy when I learned that Tolstoy was a fellow rat!)

5.0 out of 5 stars Meeting an old friend from the past, November 4, 1999

This review is from: The New Astrology: A Unique Synthesis of the World's Two Great Astrological Systems: The Chinese and Western (Paperback)
I am a numerologist and am always looking at new ways of understanding people. I saw this book for a brief while in 1992 at a bookshop called, would you believe it, Fountainhead.

I was really amazed at some of its predictions and pleased to be put in the same league as JFK and Jean Paul Sartre, both Gemini-Snakes. However, by the time I made up my mind to buy it, it was gone.

So it was a real pleasure to see it back on Amazon.com today.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun! Fun! Fun! Compatibility section is right on the money!, July 31, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The New Astrology: A Unique Synthesis of the World's Two Great Astrological Systems: The Chinese and Western (Paperback)
Contains an informative and interesting explanation of the two types of astrology in the beginning of the book. The author follows this with a general break down of the Eastern personality types. She then zeros in on more specific personality types by combining the Western Astrology Signs with the Eastern Signs. My friends and I have been amazed at the accuracy of the Compatibility section! But she doesn't just describe "Love" signs or the "good" side of each personality. The New Astrology gives both positive and negative aspects; the environment best suited for each personality; how they function within home and family; and suggested professions. I think it is the most fun when used in conjunction with, and as a supplement to, conventional astrology charts. So it's not brain surgery...lighten up!
