Book Description

March 12, 2007
“I had just learned standard bridge bidding and was trying to learn 2/1. Every person that I played with had their own style and followed their interpretation of standard bidding. Then I met Bob Gish and he introduced me to his bidding system: The New Awakening. I could not believe how this system has helped me. I make better bids and get to good contracts.”

I have studied, played and consulted with many bridge players, about ideas and how to put them together into this book, called The New Awakening.

4.0 out of 5 stars Incomplete but Holds Great Promise, August 20, 2007

This review is from: The New Awakening: an improved bidding system in bridge (Paperback)
As a devotee of bidding theory, there is probably not a system that I have not explored. There are a number of relay systems which are quite precise in pinpointing distribution and values, but these entail a great deal of memorization and lots of bidding room to exchange all of the partnership information. A groundbreaking work in the field was Delmain's Hand Pattern System, which allowed an opening bidder to convey a great amount of information with just the opening bid. The sequences following the open bid were complex and required a great deal of clarification via a series of relays. Gish has provided a much simpler method, with a more succinct bidding approach to conveying the entire pattern of a hand. Using canape bids, it becomes much easier to pinpoint distribution and reach contracts that other pairs will miss because of a lack of high cards.

Unfortunately, Gish gives short shrift to following up on the information that has been derived from partner's bids. He touches on some asking bids, but a couple of pages is not sufficient to explain the various types of asking bids (control, long suit, short suit, trump, key card, etc.) I think that this system offers a high degree of ease of use, especially when considering the amount of information that is quickly gleaned from opener's first two bids. If Mr. Gish can write a volume 2 that covers the missing or limited aspects of following up after the distribution has been learned, I believe he will have provided a major work that can lead to outstanding results.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but lacking examples, March 22, 2008
This review is from: The New Awakening: an improved bidding system in bridge (Paperback)
I am a system nut also and buy most new books. This one is interesting, but I enjoyed Sabine Auken's I LOVE THIS GAME much more for her bridge knowledge and stories and introduction to her system.

The awakening uses some ideas I have developed further and thus confirms that this may be the 21st Century improvement for strong club systems. More examples would be helpful for those players who need to be convinced that this method is playable with good results and does not require a lot of memory work.

This is a Big Club/Canape system. For those who spend way too much time and money reading system books, it can fairly be described as a simple version of Larry Weiss' Simplified Club. while the latter is, I think, I better system, this is a very good introduction to a system grounded in showing hand pattern (which makes Roman Club its Great Grandfather).

The author presents the system well. A negative, mentioned by others, is that too little is said about bidding in competition.

For those unfamiliar with this species of bidding, this is a fine introduction. Even if you never play or play against this system, it will improve your valuation by making you think about shape.
