Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1 Excellent color photographs of multiracial children illustrate these concept books, which update material originally presented in Mister Rogers Talks About (Platt & Munk, 1974; o.p.). Although there are numerous books about starting school, Going to Day Care is one of the few titles which deals with day care. The text discusses both family day care and day-care centers and deals with activities that concern children, such as eating, sleeping and going to the bathroom. The second title serves as a starting point for parent and child discussions about The New Baby. Although the text deals with feelings of jealousy and envy, they are not the major focus, as they are in Martha Alexander's Nobody Asked Me If I Wanted a Baby Sister (Dial, 1971). The positive and negative aspects of a new baby in the house are presented in a manner easily understood by preschoolers, and are further clarified by the liberal use of color photographs. Questions are included as discussion starters, in a manner similar to the way Mister Rogers speaks on his television program. Two very fine titles about children's first experiences. 5.0 out of 5 stars Older children will see that parents can love two!, August 30, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The New Baby (Paperstar) (Mass Market Paperback)
This book is tremendous! Rogers does an excellent job showing that love and affection can be shared with both children. He also lets the older child see how they can be a big sister/brother and help Mom and Dad with the new baby's needs too! I buy this book for everyone I know who has a 2nd baby!

5.0 out of 5 stars great gift book, October 25, 2001
This review is from: The New Baby (Paperstar) (Mass Market Paperback)
We received this book as a gift when we were expecting our second child. It is a great book for parents to read to very young children who are expecting their first siblings. The only drawback is the dated pictures. If they were updated, it would be flawless!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Book for Discussing a Sibling's Feelings Toward a New Baby, September 21, 2005
The New Baby is a book that discusses the feelings that older siblings can have toward a new baby. In the typically simple, direct style that Mr. Rogers uses on Mister Roger's Neighborhood, Fred Rogers helps a child understand that both the baby and he/she are special. He also offers the assurance that parents have enough love for every child in the family.

The book has warm photographs of family members interacting with babies. These are useful in discussing what it will be like to have a baby in the house. I think this is an excellent book to read with children who are soon-to-be brothers or sisters.
