Have been wearing this shoe for daily power walking with my wife for many years now. One pair lasts about a year. I can tell it's time for a replacement when my back and knees start to ache, look as the soles and notice they have no tread left and then lace up the new pair I keep in reserve while ordering another two pairs from Amazon. Great walking shoes at a great price.

This shoe is the only shoe in the known universe, that manages to both be cool and provide the necessary support for feet that 'over pronate'.

This is an excellent deal for a very durable and super - comfortable shoe for larger athletes and even non-athletes. As many reviewers has noted this is an excellent walking shoe and all-around sports shoe that can be used for running provided you have the right combination of body mass and cushioning requirements to make it work. If you are looking at this as a casual shoe then fit is probably not as important, but if you intend to run you may need to experiment a while to find the right combination of size and width. For me there is a huge difference in the size I need with these shoes with the SL-1 Last than what I need for other athletic shoes, and the SL-2 last in particular. I have had to go with 11 or 11.5 2Es on SL-2 new balance shoes with available widths, my size in the 580 series is 10 D. That's a pretty big difference.
As for this shoe in particular I have to say that other reviews are accurate in pointing out the strengths. The upper is super comfortable. It manages to combine very good wet-grass protection and excellent breathability, and the simplicity and lack of seems, combined with the high instep and roomy forefoot work perfectly for me. In this aspect, newer is definitely not better as more stitching and the use of synthetic "leather" means less comfort, less breathibility, and more reliance on cheap overseas labor. The midsole is very firm, but for me it is soft enough for running, especially if I rotate with other more cushioned shoes. I don't really notice the extra weight. And the firm, flat, low-rise soles work really well on trails and uneven surfaces whether running or walking. In the end, this is a VERY versatile shoe that won't be ruined for one use by using it for another. One point that hasn't been brought out is that this is one of the few "motion control" shoes that works to correct either pronation or supination. Most people have a natural inward roll in their gate (pronation) that helps absorb some of the impact of landing on your foot. Those with too much roll "overpronate" and need shoes which prevent inward roll, whereas those with too little roll underpronate and need extra cushioning and more flexibility to help absorb the shock that their mechanics do not. However there are a few folks, like my sister, who's feet actually roll outwards. Any stiff motion control shoe works better for these folks than a neutral cushioning shoe would, but I would say the 580 is especially well designed to keep the heel centered against motion in either direction due to the use of ENCAP and a roll bar rather than the "medial post" of higher density foam in the inner half of the heel, which is used in virtually all stability and most motion control shoes. It should be noted that I have used the 585, but I haven't tried the 587. I find these 580s work as well as the 585s for running and better for walking. I do prefer my NB 673 for the low mileage road running I do, but as those take some time to recover it is great to be able to rotate with these.

I had researched a shoe for a heavy men runner (250 lbs) and decided upon Asics Gel-MC Plus Classic and the NB M580. I use the the Asics for my running and the NB for my long swift walk in my neighborhood with constantly changing elevations. Several reviewers had mentioned the NB was very wide, which was why I liked NB shoes. I sometimes need a 12e or 12eee, depending upon shoe style and maker. But this was ridiculous. The NB M580 normal width shoe was the largest shoe I had ever worn. Not only did I have to use two pair of socks, I had to lace the shoe up as far as it would go and I still did not have a firm fit. On the positive side, my knees felt better, but on the negative side I developed shin splints, which was something I have not had since high school. Once I quit using the NB my shin splints went away. What a shame.

I have been having difficulty finding tennis shoes with soft insoles because I walk long distance. This shoe is the softest I have found so far for a good price in a New Balance. I'm still hoping there is a pair a little bit better than the 580. So chances are that I will not buy these again, but continue looking for the ultimate shoe if its out there. However, I gave this shoe a 4 out of 5 rating.

The shape of this tennis is a very clear design defect. Ordered 7.5 Medium for my son and his feet seemed to be inside the box of the shoes. I have read good review of this shoes but I guess this are coming from people with EXTREMELY wide feet.
Now, I am trying to return them and there is no option for bad designed tennis shoes, meaning: I have to pay the shipping fees to send them back and more will automatically be deducted from my total credit. At Amazon, only positive reviews have been published so far and I certainly do not understand why! Now that I have read reviews from other sites, I have seen this fitting issue is a common problem. |
