I'm not a young man anymore. Not exactly sure what happened but it seems like just a few days ago I could run twenty miles and not get out of breath. Now I drive twenty miles and I need a nap. My feet are fried. They are mere shadows of their former glory. Over the years I've broken toes, I suffer from Morton's Neuroma in my right foot, lost all ten toenails twice during extreme backpacking adventures, my feet are hot even on cold winter days, suffer bone spurs in my heals and my arches are falling. From the outside I look in good shape but my feet think otherwise.

That's why I need a good shoe. In comes the New Balance MT481. After trying on more shoes then Imelda Marcos has ever owned I decided this shoe worked for me. Here a the reasons.

The upper inside of the shoe has smooth fabric. Poor constructed shoes leave harsh seems that hurts the top of my feet.

    Lightweight yet rugged.

    Excellent construction and materials.

Grippy rubber sole with no hard plastic sections.

Sole has upper foam for good absorption.

Deep heal area so the shoe does not feel like it's going to slide off.

Toe area is semi-squared off so toes are not cramped.

More for trail running then on a track.

Comes in 4E wide so foot has room to move.

Plenty of upper mesh material that breaths well and keeps feet cooler.

Great lace pattern for a good fit.

Plastic eye-holes for easy lacing up.

Black and gray combo with orange accents look great.

Plenty of room for arch insert.

Comfortable fit with just the included insert.

Great price for a shoe of this quality.

One out of every four New Balance shoes are made in the USA.

I've put these shoes through a lot the past 18 months. I've used them primarily for mud and obstacle runs. They drain well after going through water, and both the traction and support they provide over rough terrain has always exceeded my expectations. They also wash very easily. Ultimately, it's the lining on the inside of the shoe near the heal that is causing me to retire them. The lining has fallen apart, exposing a hard plastic piece (part of the shell) which tears up the back of my heal. This has happened with both shoes so I don't think it's a fluke. But as I said, I got a ton of use out of them, and definitely my money's worth.

For the money these shoes are great - I paid 50$ - I'm an avid hiker and the soles are textured in a way that they have superb traction on any type of terrain and in all weather conditions. The construction is incredibly solid and durable while still looking cool as hell. I've had them for almost a year and the ONLY signs of wear and tear are where the heel of your foot rubs against the fabric on the inside of the shoe, it's only in one of them and it's not that bad but it happens to all shoes eventually. They really don't show how much I've put them through.

They are also very comfortable, by far the best feeling shoes I've had. The second I tried them on I knew I was buying them, that's how comfy they are. I've never gotten sore feet with these however I've never gone running in them, only walking. They're too heavy to be considered running shoes anyway but they're great for some light trail blazing. Overall I'll definitely be buying another pair when mine (eventually) give out. But almost a year down and they've still got lots of life left.

I have really wide feet, making shoe shopping hard. New Balance has been one of the few brands that has wide sizes.

Unfortunately, the quality of their materials has degraded alarmingly over the last few years to the point where there's very little value remaining. The sole started coming away from the upper on these within a couple months, under light, everyday use.

Just another, previously decent company cutting corners for short-term gain and dooming themselves to long-term failure. Sad.

They surpassed all my expectations. They grip stone, dirt, and mud. They are comfortable and feather-weight. They dry quickly if they get wet. You can't possibly get a better shoe for the money.

In my experience New Balance shoes hold up better and provide comfort and support longer than other brands of shoes. I am a larger male (over 210 lbs and fit) and have been physically active for all of my life. New Balance shoes hold up better to the "beating" an athletic shoe takes from me, whether that is running several miles on and off the road, lifting weights, or doing a crossfit circuit. Other shoes are lighter for running, but they also wear out on me in about 1/2 the time of the NB shoes. If you are not a lightweight guy and you are hard on your shoes, I recommend these for your training program. I wear a size 14 -15 shoe (depending on the brand) and the size 14 in these fits me fine.

great pair of running shoes for the money. the only thing i had to deal with is the the sizes changed from the last time i had a pair of new balances. I went from 10 1/2 wide d to a 9 wide 4e. they fit and feel great. Note im not a runner but, i do alot of walking. never had feet problems with these type of sneakers from New Balance. I would have to say that everyone should give them a try because you wont be sorry.
