I'm a serious road runner, and I have very wide feet. This leaves me with few options. New Balance 4E width shoes have always served me well. A few years ago I tried the minimalist MX20 after >10 mile runs began hurting my knees. Magic happened. After a month of adapting to the new stride (i.e. mid-foot striking rather than heel striking), my knee problems vanished. Minumus to the rescue!

Time passed, the shoe wore out as all shoes do. I came back to Amazon to find a replacement. I bought this one because it doesn't have the reinforcing strap across the top of the toe box, which restricts my foot when running. However, the 1690 is not comparable to other Minimus shoes. It is much thicker in the sole, heavier, and more biased toward the "traditional" running shoe heel-strike stride. The 1690 product description on Amazon is not thorough, so I'm writing this for others who may think as I did that this 1690 is a minimalist shoe. It ain't so.

As always, Amazon made it painless (and free!) to return, so that was nice.

I've been wearing NB 990's for about a decade now b/c of my wide feet and their comfort. They now cost more than $150 on amazon so I saw a pair of M1690 Minimus' that had my width, advertised a lighter weight, and had a more stylish design. I got 'em in the mail today and they look & fit perfectly! I have found my new shoe.

I've been running in 5 fingers, Merrell Barefoots, and NB Minimus for the last 4 years. A Barefoot shoe this is not, and it barely qualifies as a minimalist shoe. However, it feels a lot like a minimalist shoe and I'm able to run using a mid-foot strike. For those really pounding the pavement, this shoe is for you! I've got extremely wide feet so I got a 4E and they fit awesome.

Bought the 4E. It fits exactly as expected and provides relief on my feet. I own other Minimus shoes and these are not as lightweight and low profile as the others. But these are certainly more comfortable for people with foot issues.

    I loved this shoe!

First: Comfort abounds! Some shoes "get loose" or "open" a bit at the mouth after you have been running - not these. There is a "pillow" that surrounds your ankle at the mouth/opening that creates a comfortable but snug fit.

At first, when I saw the rubber style cleats I thought these will slide on wet surfaces. NOT.

I ran in these shoes 3 times and I am 200 pound runner (5'9").

GREAT: loose terrain, pavement wet/dry, concrete wet/dry, uneven surfaces, uphill.
BAD: wet grass, the sliding is not bad but it is still evident.

    I love these shoes.

This is a great shoe. Light weight and has got good support on the bottom for hard surfaces. However, as pointed out in the other reviews this shoe is a bit tight for long running times. This may not be the ideal fit for jobs which involves standing for the most time. I'd say more than 4 - 5 hours it starts to ache but for my purpose this is great since I use it only for a couple of hours.

I'd recommend an extra 0.5 in size(from your original) to make it comfortable for an all day use.

    This shoe breathes really well.

Not the best for cold or wet weather.

Over all its a great shoe, just wish my big toe did not put a hole in both shoes on the upper thin part.

i wore them for pretty much a year straight at work, and they worked great.

The only other down side is that they are really slippery when its wet out, more so then any of my other shoes.

I thought earlier reviews of the wear and tear issues were just outliers but I also had similar issues. After about 30 miles of running over one month, the yellow along the ankle has begun to unravel. I only run on asphalt so it was not due to it getting caught on something.

Otherwise this is a great shoe. It was light and comfortable. I recommend if you have wide feet to avoid this shoe however. It runs a it thin.
