Lets get one thing out of the way. I run shoes ragged. I work all day and I'm on my feet the entire time, I walk on every type of surface you can imagine, I get my shoes dirty and muddy and walk on rock and dirt and broken asphalt and just... everything. I sometimes walk miles a day.
I'm constantly on the search for a steel toe walking shoe since I walk so much I need a very comfortable shoe, I'm on construction sites often and need a steel toe. This is a darn hard combination to come across.
These shoes are extremely comfortable, very close to as comfortable as my running NB shoes, they're nice and light and seem durable.
My one complaint? The sole. I've already (after about a month) cracked a line straight across the sole, it almost seems like the material split. I've had this problem on other shoes so I'm not sure I can blame the shoe itself, and like I said, I punish these things. That being said, I feel like they should be able to take that beating.
Keens have been my go to shoe before this, specifically this shoe here: Keen Utility Detroit Steel Peacoat
The keens have never once had the sole crack on them, my issue with them have been the soles wear out very quickly. After about 6 months this shoe was dead so I was VERY excited to find these New Balance.
The NB are more comfortable and look nicer than the keens, other than the sole cracking on them, they seem to be holding up better as well.
For someone who doesnt treat their shoes like I do (almost everyone else) this will most likely be a fantastic shoe, and you'll be very happy with it.
UPDATE 3 MONTHS
So far, pretty good. The crack on the sole on my right shoe hasn't really worsened and overall the soles are holding up pretty well. The shoes have taken a beating but are still retaining their color/shape and most importantly, their comfort. I really feel the need to emphasize the comfort of these shoes, every time I put them on I want to buy a pair for everyday use outside of work, they are more comfortable than my current "after work" shoes. When I first bought them, the inside soles have some lines manufactured into the pad for decoration which I was able to feel for about a week, and that was slightly annoying, after that week I wasn't able to feel the seem anymore and they've been a treat to wear.
I have tendency to walk on the insides of my feet which tend to wear my soles more on the insides then the outsides, so far there isn't much sign of that yet, which is pretty impressive.
Honestly, if the sole hadn't of cracked I'd be very, very happy. I might have to buy another pair after these wear out to see if it was just a fluke, as my left shoe shoes no sign of this problem at all.
FINAL UPDATE ALMOST 4 MONTHS
I was pretty happy with them up until this week. It was a rainy day and I was out working only to find both my feet soaking wet. I check the crack on my right sole to find it split open and a small crack forming on my left sole. I don't expect these shoes to be "water proof", but I do expect to be able to walk in a couple puddles without my socks getting soaking wet. I'm currently in the market for new shoes and will probably look into some Doc Martens since they have a reputation of having amazing soles. I had to downgrade to 3 stars since less than 4 months out of a pair of shoes is pretty unacceptable in my book. Everything I previously said in my review still holds, but if you are a pro shoe abuser, then, these are not the shoes you are looking for!

Finally I found a comfortable safety shoe. We have shoe trucks come to work but all they carry are regular and wide widths. A wide width does not come close to the 4E width I like. First day wearing the new shoes and I was pleased with the usual comfort I get from New Balance shoes! Thank You New Balance!

The sole of the shoe split and I have only had them for about a month and a half. So much for protecting my feet!

I have owned a few New Balance Products with no problems but these...argh! I have always had difficulty with safety shoes, and granted I have screwed up feet, but they were very uncomfortable. MOST OF ALL...I have owned them since Nov 2013, they ALWAYS got my feet wet during even a light rain. AND the soles are already almost cracked in half. One shoe in 2 places. HORRIBLE PRODUCT.

I would not purchase merchandise from NY Fashion Depot. The shoes arrived defective. We had to return the shoes at our cost to ship them back. NY Fashion Depot did not refund us the original amount of our purchase, nor did they refund the cost to ship the shoes back. We were out abou $8 for a defective product. Amazon, however, did give us a refund after I filed a complaint.

I've worn red wings for the past 3 yrs. and after 8 hrs. my feet were always killing me. Got these about 3 weeks ago, feels like I am wearing my regular shoes at work. I work 10-12 hrs. on my feet on concrete in a machine shop. Wish I would have bought these years ago. Even if they only last a year I think they're worth it.

Walking on concrete all day(or most of the day) and remaining comfortable is a tough task for many(all more like it) steel toe boots/sneakers. Only 2 have an acceptable level of comfort, it is this model and also a sketchers steel toe sneaker. Both are 3-4 stars. I honestly put them neck and neck with this NB model slightly edging out the other. I have the same problem with both shoes...Durability. They both start developing holes on the inside of the shoe right above your ankle after a semi short period of time. This hole will develop blisters quickly. The problem with comfortable work shoes like these two is that the soft material inside simply is not up to the task of durability. If you get an uncomfortable pair of Timberland leather work boots with a more durable inside material it will last longer but your not as comfortable. Simply put, your gonna have to decide between durability and comfort. Either spend more money more often to replace these sneaker type of work shoes or suffer through more durable boots. I am having and have been having a hell of a time deciding for myself. I seem to be wasting so much money ordering a new pair of boots every 3 months instead of once a year like most people. 3.5 stars.

I have wide feet (4E) and these shoes fit like their supposed to and for or a steel toe shoe they were surprisingly comfy right out of the box. I'm thinking about ordering a backup pair.

2.5 months into use and the sole has completely split across the bottom of the left shoe. Now, in the rain, water gets in from underneath as well as the usual bit seeping through the top layer. Of course, they don't claim to be water resistant, so my review is basically just for the length of time they lasted.
I'm in foodservice delivery, driving a tractor trailer and making food deliveries to restaurants. I walk on gravel, dirt, concrete, asphalt, tile, carpet, you name it. They were very comfortable and light for a steel toe. Almost felt like I was just wearing tennis shoes. Also had fairly dependable grip on all surfaces, save for ice, but nothing will work there except cleats.
All in all they were great, but they only lasted from October 31st until January 10th. Not even 2.5 months. I won't buy them again because I feel like I should get at least 6 months out of a pair of shoes before they present with catastrophic failure. Tread wear, laces tearing, seams splitting, those things I expect around 6 months, but the sole splitting all the way across the balls of my feet after 2+ months is unacceptable.

It's generally a comfortable work shoe, but still a little snug in the toe area...but that's steel toed shoes for you. The tread is a little less than desired when getting into equipment. My foot has slid quite a few times while climbing on to my forklift.
