5.0 out of 5 stars New Balance now a legit option for hiking boots!
I received a pair of these as a gift and to be honest I didn't expect much from them at all. I have been a die hard Asolo user for over 20 years so even the idea of using another brand took some getting used too however I can now safely say that New Balance is now a legitimate option for people looking for a quality hiking boot. I have been a New Balance customer for years. Their 4E shoes fit my feet perfectly. When New Balance acquired Dunham, I started wearing their casual shoes too. When they finally built a hiking boot in 4E is was excited and ordered a pair immediately. What a disappointment. The toe box is not nearly as wide as other New Balance/Dunham 4E's. Yet the heel is much wider than any others I've tried. It's almost as though they are designed for overweight narrow footed people! Dunham also seems to be trying new gimmicks to gain favor; the tongue is only gusseted on one side - making it harder to get the boots on and off. The lacing system is...weird.

Fortunately, since these were not wide as advertised, Amazon gave me a complete refund. As always I was totally satisfied with Amazon.com during this experience.

If you are not buying this boot for wide feet, you may be satisfied. If you are looking for something that fits like other 4E's, I don't think you'll get a good fit.

5.0 out of 5 stars New Balance now a legit option for hiking boots!, August 22, 2009
I received a pair of these as a gift and to be honest I didn't expect much from them at all. I have been a die hard Asolo user for over 20 years so even the idea of using another brand took some getting used too however I can now safely say that New Balance is now a legitimate option for people looking for a quality hiking boot. One of the best things about these boots is the relatively short time it took to break them in. It usually takes about twice as long for me to comfortably break in a pair of Asolo's. These boots are easily on par with other quality boots in the 150-200 dollar range. Vibram outsole, Gore Tex membrane, removable insoles, etc..

Overall I was quite blown away, not necessarily because this is such an outstanding boot, which it is, but more because I just didn't think of New Balance as a serious contender for quality hiking boots. Then again I now realize that this isn't the same old New Balance that I grew up with. They are now making a lot more than just sneakers and tennis shoes. A quick glance at their overall line of products reveals a serious effort by New Balance to establish themselves in the performance Walking/Hiking category. They are even making some quality water shoes now as well and in all honesty its nice to see a company like New Balance try and make some inroads into these categories of production after all more competition simply leads to better shoes and better prices for the masses.

I now see that Backpacker magazine has awarded these with an editors choice award for 2009 and I couldn't possibly agree more. I took these on a week long trip in the Rockies and we got slammed with rain almost every day we were there and these boots never let my feet get even slightly wet. They performed flawlessly on that trip. Last but not least you have the boots appearance and I for one absolutely love the way they look. I am not one for the bold and crazy designs that seem to be on 90% of today's footwear. I like nice clean designs with my footwear especially my hiking boots and these definitely have a clean look. I really like the orange stitching against the brown leather and the orange/copper rivets were a great touch. Even the New Balance logo is done in a very clean manner so as not to distract from the overall clean aesthetics of the boot. Overall an outstanding design in my opinion.

This pair of boots, along with the editors choice award from backpacker magazine, has really taken New Balance to a whole new level in this market. That editors choice award alone will give New Balance a lot of new credability. The bottom line is they deserve it. They have made an outstanding pair of boots and have kept the price relatively low. A MSRP of 149.99 means that you could very well score a pair of these boots for around a hundred bucks on sale and its not often you can get a pair of quality boots for that cheap, in fact I usually pay 2-3 times that much. Its just a great pair of boots for a great price.

Great job New Balance. I am really looking forward to seeing their future releases.

5.0 out of 5 stars Most comfortable hiking boots, October 11, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I needed boots for hiking that were comfortable and supportive. These boots exceeded my expectations. I have size 13EEEE feet so it's not easy finding footware that fit so well. They have excellent ankle support which I needed due to spraining my ankle several times. The few hikes I have taken proved these boots were the right choice.

4.0 out of 5 stars 4E should be 3E, December 26, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
A fine shoe, but wrongly labelled as a size 4E. Also was hard to squeeze into, as the toungue opens out on only one side = the other is sewn fast to shoe. Also needs a new innersole -the one that comes with it is as thin as cardboard.
Made of verygood materials, leather and ballistic-like material and metal
lace holders. I kept it because I could squeeze into it and "break them in," and I need them right now, but wish i'd been able to send them back for a larger size. Zappos is better, when they have your size.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not for wide feet!, January 1, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
New Balance running shoes are great because they offer sizes for wide feet. But according to New Balance's web site, they purposely build their hiking boots narrow. Their instructions are to order one size larger / wider than normal in order to get New Balance hiking boots to fit. We did that: my husband normally wears 11-3E, and we ordered a pair of these boots in 11 1/2-4E. Unfortunately, the boots are still FAR too narrow for his feet. They're closer to a D width than the 4-E on the label. This is the first problem we've had with New Balance footwear being too narrow, but again, according to their web site, this is a deliberate design philosophy. If you have wide feet, we suggest you be very careful about ordering these boots. My husband ended up buying a pair of Montrail Torre GTX hiking boots, size 11W from a local hiking shop, and these fit perfectly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Boots, November 30, 2009

Excellent quality and fit. I need an extra wide boot and this 4EEEE fits like a glove. Virtually no break in needed. Took them out of the box and went on a five mile hike with no sign of discomfort, I would buy these again with no reservations.

Have had these a few months now. It is difficult to find narrow boots most are sized medium, wide or xtra wide. I sized them per other new balance running shoes I own. They are a 10 1/2 N, I usually wear a 10 however. So get a half size larger is my advice for all new balance footwear.
I wear these a lot over rocky terrain, by the sea shore and climbing. They grip well but are not so stiff they don't bend when needed. I am not a tough terrain climber anymore however I am rough on my boots, skidding and jumping down steep trails and jumping from rocks to rocks. These still look fairly new even with quite a bit of wear already over many different types terrain. I wear them for a whole day 10 hours or so on the weekends and they are comfortable. Love the ankle support and they adjust well with the laces. Not too stiff for regular around town and they look good too. Have had many different hiking/walking boots over the years these rate in the top two I have owned.

2.0 out of 5 stars Warning: Extremely Narrow in 2EE and 4EE - Possible Design Problems, November 9, 2006
As a loyal New Balance customer, I purchased a pair of these shoes in 9 EE at an online retailer sight unseen. The shoes turned out to be *extremely* narrow. My suspicion was that the wrong label was placed on the shoes at the factory. So, I purchased a pair of 9 4E. These too were extremely narrow.

After several phone calls to the specialty retailer, they had their pedorthist (certified cobbler who addresses medical shoe modifications)inspect them. He affirmed that both shoes were narrow.

While I am still a New Balance fan, I will stick to traditional bricks and mortar retailers.

3.0 out of 5 stars Almost great - but test them well before taking them out!, December 27, 2010

This review is from: New Balance Men's MO1500 Outdoor Shoe (Apparel)
First I want to commend New Balance for continuing to provide shoes for people with truly wide feet. There are very few options available to us!

With regard to this boot, the width and fit on the foot were perfect for me. It is a well built boot and mostly performed well on a recent 36 mile backpacking trip. However I did have one significant problem which forces me to give it a 3 rather than a 5 rating. The boot uppers along the outside on both boots caused serious rubbing above the ankle to the point where I was getting jabbing pains with every step after hiking a number of miles. The problem could not be solved by either loosening or tightening the laces. Some 20 miles into my trip, after two days of pain, I made the necessary, but not desired, decision to cut away a portion of the boot that was causing the problem. Pretty sad to have to ruin such a nice shoe, but it did away with the physical pain. Someone else has posted a similar complaint on this boot.

If you are going to buy these I would suggest trying them at home for a while and if you have even the slightest rubbing above the ankle, send em back! The problem will not go away but will get worse.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great boots! Fit perfectly!, November 10, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I'm 43 years old, and have had B width feet my entire life. Finding properly fitting shoes and boots for my 11.5B feet has always been difficult, and I refuse to wear the typical off-the-shelf shoe widths which flop around on your feet like a worn out pair of slippers.

I strongly recommend that before you purchase any shoes or boots online, you first make a trip to a decent shoe store and have your feet properly measured with a Brannock device (the metal thing with two sliding gizmos you stand on to get an accurate measurement). If you plan on wearing heavy socks when wearing the hiking or work boots you plan to purchase, wear those socks when you have your foot measured.

I can guarantee you that these boots run true to size. Well fitting shoes are suppose to be snug across the width; don't let anyone tell you otherwise. I've worn the following brands in 11.5B, and all of them fit the same: Red Wing work boots, New Balance shoes / hikers, Foot Joy golf shoes, and Bostonian dress shoes.

If you want a well made and great fitting boot, this is one of them. Otherwise, get yourself some floppy old slippers!
