I wear these in size 9.5 EE. The toe box is very roomy and comfortable. These are well made of quality materials, and are made in USA. These are "motion control shoes" which are good for people with soft arches or flat feet and need a shoe that prevents over-pronation which can lead to ailments such as plantar fasciitus or heel pain. They are even better with arch support insoles. Terrific shoes, I will definitely buy more.

I suffer from both flat-feet and pronation issues. As the feets bones are connected to the leg, knees, back, etc., such simply problems have serious health repercussions. I often struggle with painful, swollen knees, lower back problems, all in part related to feet problems.

I have searched far and wide looking for THE running shoe that would help. This is, by far, the single best shoe I've found to help mitigate these myriad problems that start with flat-feet and pronation. Well-built and supportive, it goes a long way to easing symptoms. I've tried all of the "best" running shoes alleging help with pronation - this shoe delivers!

Background: 6'2", 235lb male @ around a 20min 5K & training 12-15 mi/week mixed among sprints & 3-6 mi runs. My right foot has no arch and left only a mild arch.

I started on the MR1011 2 yrs ago as the only shoe wide enough and squared off at the toe-box to fit. I was wearing a size 14 in some asics until a running store sized me down to a 13 2E in the 1011. The 1011 wasn't the best shoe (a little stiff until dozens of miles were put on them), but the only thing I tried providing the control I needed as well as strong enough material to withstand hundreds of miles on training.

The 1012 is a much better shoe than the 1011. My first ordered pair was a 12.5 2E, but was still too small in the toe and very stiff. I moved up to a 4E and the shoe became perfect. The shoe is very supportive, great at reducing over-pronation, has good toe-off transition (for being what it is, Franjenstein's monster's shoe) and the tight heel cup is nice. I am not looking to run marathons, but I'd use this shoe for a 10k or 1/2. For my 5K races I am still looking for a lighter, faster race shoe (but haven't found one with the same wide-toed last).

The only complaint I had was how stiff the first pair was (caused tibialis cramping), so I hope it's not manufacturing troubles, becauseI bought a second pair.

Oh, and the "N-lock" laces that come with the shoe are very good at reducing the amount of lace slip and shoe loosening.

In the interest of full disclosure, I'm 6'1" and 255 pounds at the time of this writing, I'm a severe over pronator, and I've never really been a runner.

That said, I did do a considerable amount of research before deciding on these based on numerous websites. Fit wise these are very nice for me. Plenty of room in the toe and wide enough for me without needing to go to the "wide". They also really do seem to help with the over pronation. The reason these get 3 stars though is that they have virtually no cushion to them. I use them mostly for walking and I'm usually fine with them for that. However, if I do ANY running at all with them my knees are KILLING me that night and all of the next day.

Bottom line is these were supposedly THE shoes for big (fat @&s) over pronators so I was willing to pay the nearly double of any other shoe I've been using for exercise and I've been disappointed with them for anything other than walking at a leisurely pace.

    UPDATE:
Down to 230 lbs and these are still terrible for any kind of activity other than a leisurely walk. Even a brisk walk leaves my knees and shins aching for days after wearing these. Took them down to 2 stars because they're just not cutting it for what they cost. I'm probably going to just toss them because I've got plenty of shoes that don't cause me pain to wear instead.

New Balance is my favorite brand because their shoe designs better accommodate my wide feet, providing good support while also giving me good amount of room in the toe box. I would keep ordering the MR1012 if I could.

I wear orthotics in my 9EE shoes and, with wide feet, it can be tough to find a shoe that offers good support and accommodates orthotics well. My podiatrist recommended these and they've been a dream come true. Most of my life I've resigned myself to shoes feeling uncomfortable most of the time, but especially when new. Now with these. These shoes fit comfortably AND offer great support from day one. A sign of a very good fit for my feet.

It is important to realize that New Balance uses two different "lasts" (shoe forms) for its shoes. For this model they use the SL-2 shape. That's important because now that this model is discontinued, New Balance fans like me should stick with models using the same SL-2 shape. Customers moving to an SL-1 model may be disappointed or unhappy with fit.

I asked New Balance customer support what shoe they would recommend now that the MR1012 has been retired. Here is there reply: "At this time we do not have a descendant of this model. However, please take a look at our M1140SB1 which is built on the SL-2 Last and offers the stability system to help prevent overpronation like the 1012."
