2.0 out of 5 stars A Tip for Sneaker Buyers, October 29, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: New Balance Men's MT910 Trail Running Shoe (Apparel)
Here's a tip for sneaker buyers. If you find a model you like, buy several pairs immediately, because you can be sure the manufacturer will discontinue that model.

My preference is for Gore-tex lined trail runners. That's not because I'm a trail runner. Rather, I'm a nature photographer who spends a lot of time in muddy woods carrying a 40 pound pack of camera gear on my back, and the trail runners take up the impact of my heavy load while the gore-tex keeps my feet dry. I also prefer that they not have mesh tops to help keep my feet a little warm on a cool day when I'm sitting waiting for a fox to show up.

My recent favorite was the New Balance MTI1100 that provided the fit, support and comfort that I wanted, seemed to be designed for an over-pronator like me, and was the only Gore-tex trail runner in their line. Naturally NB discontinued it. I knew that NB often just updated a shoe, adding a digit to the model number but when I looked on their web-site there was no model MTI1101 or anything near it. Instead there was only one trail runner with gore-tex, the MT910GT. It had mesh tops, but I figured I'd sacrifice the warmth, especially since New Balance was the only comfortable shoe I'd been able to find since Montrail was acquired by Columbia Sportswear.

The bottom line is of course that I couldn't wear the shoes. Although NB claims cushioning and stability with an Abzorb sole, the soles felt hard and paper thin. I couldn't feel comfortable in these shoes even when I was walking around without a load. Ultimately they went to the Salvation Army. It may be that somebody can wear these shoes, but not someone who needs cushioning and stability.

1.0 out of 5 stars Bring back the MT908, July 4, 2010
This review is from: New Balance Men's MT910 Trail Running Shoe (Apparel)
Ditto on buying several pairs of a shoe you like, because the manufactures can't leave good enough alone. I've been trail running in the MT9XX series going back to the MT904. The MT908 was my favorite. I've been very happy with the Rock Stop and toe protection. For most of the series, the upper has been fairly comfortable after cutting off the high tab in the back that rubs on the Achilles tendon causing tendonitis [...]

New Balance has ruined the upper with the MT910. The height of the upper has increased with inflexible dense foam that cannot be easily cutaway. The stiff high-top padding may be appealing to someone looking for a hiking boot, but it injures your ankle and Achilles tendon if you run distances in them. Further, the top eyelet has a half inch wide hard plastic reinforcement that bruises the front of your ankle. New Balance has also changed the lacing configuration so that you cannot get a good fit with low-volume feet.

After suffering through about 80 miles in these shoes, they hurt just putting them on. Now I'm shopping for another brand of trail shoe with good rock protection and a low, flexible upper that fits a low-volume foot (like the MT908 minus the Achilles rubbing tab).

5.0 out of 5 stars NB MT910 Trail Runner, October 25, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I look for a shoe that has motion control and keeps my ankles from twisting as I walk or run in the fields with my dog. I have weak ankles. While I was in my teens and twenties, I repeatedly injured both ankles while playing sports. These shoes and the other NB trail running shoes which I've used over the years, because of their design and construction, give my ankles the support and control they need to minimize sprains while jogging or walking over irregular terrain.
