5.0 out of 5 stars NB MT910 Trail Runner
I look for a shoe that has motion control and keeps my ankles from twisting as I walk or run in the fields with my dog. I have weak ankles. While I was in my teens and twenties, I repeatedly injured both ankles while playing sports. These shoes and the other NB trail running shoes which I've used over the years, because of their design and construction, give my ankles...

2.0 out of 5 stars A Tip for Sneaker Buyers, October 29, 2009

This review is from: New Balance Men's MT910 Trail Running Shoe (Apparel)
Here's a tip for sneaker buyers. If you find a model you like, buy several pairs immediately, because you can be sure the manufacturer will discontinue that model.

My preference is for Gore-tex lined trail runners. That's not because I'm a trail runner. Rather, I'm a nature photographer who spends a lot of time in muddy woods carrying a 40 pound pack of camera gear on my back, and the trail runners take up the impact of my heavy load while the gore-tex keeps my feet dry. I also prefer that they not have mesh tops to help keep my feet a little warm on a cool day when I'm sitting waiting for a fox to show up.

My recent favorite was the New Balance MTI1100 that provided the fit, support and comfort that I wanted, seemed to be designed for an over-pronator like me, and was the only Gore-tex trail runner in their line. Naturally NB discontinued it. I knew that NB often just updated a shoe, adding a digit to the model number but when I looked on their web-site there was no model MTI1101 or anything near it. Instead there was only one trail runner with gore-tex, the MT910GT. It had mesh tops, but I figured I'd sacrifice the warmth, especially since New Balance was the only comfortable shoe I'd been able to find since Montrail was acquired by Columbia Sportswear.

The bottom line is of course that I couldn't wear the shoes. Although NB claims cushioning and stability with an Abzorb sole, the soles felt hard and paper thin. I couldn't feel comfortable in these shoes even when I was walking around without a load. Ultimately they went to the Salvation Army. It may be that somebody can wear these shoes, but not someone who needs cushioning and stability.

1.0 out of 5 stars Bring back the MT908, July 4, 2010
This review is from: New Balance Men's MT910 Trail Running Shoe (Apparel)
Ditto on buying several pairs of a shoe you like, because the manufactures can't leave good enough alone. I've been trail running in the MT9XX series going back to the MT904. The MT908 was my favorite. I've been very happy with the Rock Stop and toe protection. For most of the series, the upper has been fairly comfortable after cutting off the high tab in the back that rubs on the Achilles tendon causing tendonitis [...]

New Balance has ruined the upper with the MT910. The height of the upper has increased with inflexible dense foam that cannot be easily cutaway. The stiff high-top padding may be appealing to someone looking for a hiking boot, but it injures your ankle and Achilles tendon if you run distances in them. Further, the top eyelet has a half inch wide hard plastic reinforcement that bruises the front of your ankle. New Balance has also changed the lacing configuration so that you cannot get a good fit with low-volume feet.

After suffering through about 80 miles in these shoes, they hurt just putting them on. Now I'm shopping for another brand of trail shoe with good rock protection and a low, flexible upper that fits a low-volume foot (like the MT908 minus the Achilles rubbing tab).

5.0 out of 5 stars NB MT910 Trail Runner, October 25, 2011

I look for a shoe that has motion control and keeps my ankles from twisting as I walk or run in the fields with my dog. I have weak ankles. While I was in my teens and twenties, I repeatedly injured both ankles while playing sports. These shoes and the other NB trail running shoes which I've used over the years, because of their design and construction, give my ankles the support and control they need to minimize sprains while jogging or walking over irregular terrain.

4.0 out of 5 stars They do run big but otherwise decent shoe for the price, April 5, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Bought these just wanting a darker colored shoe but not wanting to spend 140 on the more expensive NB's. I've always bought the same size shoes for new balance and these do run big compared to the others (I ignored the other reviews, trust me, they're right). Otherwise the shoes look really good and are pretty functional as well. One thing I did not notice is that the toe has this hard plastic on the front...this can effect the comfort. Also, they are firm...I would compare them to a stability runner in comfort.

I wanted these shoes as winter footwear, not for running, and for that, they do well. There are a few issues, however:
- A whole size bigger and a bit wider than advertised.
- Stiff as a board!! A first for any shoe, Gore-Tex or otherwise, I've ever owned. It even makes a bit of a 'cardboard' noise at first! It does, however, soften a bit after a few hours of use, but still very stiff, at least for me. This is made more pronounced by the almost 'steel' strength toe protector.
- The edges where the last lace eyelet is rub on the ankle. Not a big deal to me, but can be painful to most.
On the plus side:
- Absolutely waterproof! The Gore-Tex does its job as advertised.
- The laces remain tied all day, no matter what.
- It looks really cool.
All in all, this shoe is a 'boot Lite', if there ever was such a thing. I don't wear it everyday, only in rain/snow, so I can live with its shortcomings.
However, your mileage will probably vary.

1.0 out of 5 stars Advanced features, but does the basics poorly, September 29, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: New Balance Men's MT910 Trail Running Shoe (Apparel)
I have been buying exclusively New Balance for quite a long time. Lately, I have moved to more difficult trails and needed the extra protection and traction.

This shoe did provide the extra protection and traction as expected, but a the cost of basic functionality.

As mentioned in a another comment, this shoe runs MUCH larger than other NB shoes (at least 1 size), so my FIT ended up pretty poor using the same size/type as my prior NB shoes.

After only a very short distance, the shoes were incredibly uncomfortable, to the point of not being able to be worn.

So overall, the advanced features worked, but the shoes could not accommodate the basic functionality of a shoe needed for extended trail excursions.
I cannot even use them for short walks.

Overall, I was very disappointed. Maybe my foot just does not work with these shoes (but they seem fine with other NB shoes)?

5.0 out of 5 stars Comfortable!, February 9, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is my third pair of this New Balance style. Out of all the different New Balance styles, this one is one of the more comfortable and supportive shoes. It's great for everyday use, as well as running. If you're looking for a great shoe, this is it!

Great sneaker! Bought these sneakers for a trip to New Zealand where I wanted a sneaker that would keep me warm, dry and rugged enough to handle the NZ terrain. Extremely happy with my purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good trail hiking shoe, January 15, 2012
This review is from: New Balance Men's MT910 Trail Running Shoe (Apparel)
I have the Goretex version of the 910 shoe and it has done a good job of keeping my feet warm. As a quick test I went on a 30 min walk in 9 degree temps and my feet stayed warm - using Smartwood mountaineering socks and this shoe.

These shoes seem to be able to grip just about everything, from rocks to lightly snow covered trails. The insole of the shoe isn't very thick but this has helped me balance on rocks without causing issues with longer walks.

When ordering these shoes you should keep in mind, that these shoes run about half a size to a full size larger than NB shoes normally run. The outside of the shoe has a hardened toe box and this adds some weight to the shoe but if you are looking for a rugged hiking shoe that is not an all out hiking book this shoe fits the bill.
