I love new balance shoes, as far as sneakers and running shoes go its the only brand I will buy. With that said I had very high hopes for this boot. I was looking for an every day winter boot that would be comfortable and warm in cold conditions (camping, snow, out door activities), this boot looked like it fit the bill perfectly. The big issue with it and the reason why I ultimately returned them is that there is a hard seam where the upper high top section of the boot is sewn to the lower section of the boot, and it is right at ankle height. I tried these boots on with winter socks and thick wool hiking socks and they were still too uncomfortable. I can't imagine that anyone would be able to look past that issue and keep the boots.

Like the previous reviewer, I have owned quite a few pair of New Balance athletic shoes and am grateful that at least one athletic shoe company caters to us folks who have wide feet. It's been a blessing to find shoes that fit. One thing I have learned, though, with New Balance's gym/running shoes is to step up to their higher priced models. The difference in quality from the low end models is very significant.
I have to wonder if these boots, priced on the low end for hiking boots, aren't revealing some of New Balance's shortcomings with their lower priced models.
CONS: Consistency in Sizing?? The previous reviewer found that a full size smaller than his normal shoe fit perfectly. I chose to follow the advice on New Balance's website that this boot "runs true to size." I ordered the same size I've been wearing for years in New Balance's gym shoes, and these boots are very tight. The 4E width is snug, and my toes are squeezed against the front of the boot. Also, little extra fabric is allowed in the tongue, and while I do not have what's considered a high instep, I can't slide this boot on without using a shoe horn. Finally, the padded insert for this boot is CHEAP. New Balance's better quality running shoes have a nicely padded insert. The one for this boot is barely more than a thin foam strip, and there doesn't seem to be much of a pliable layer to "break in" before one is standing on the realtively hard vibram sole.
PROS: These seem to be pretty well made for a light-medium trail boot, and they are definitely light in weight. However, I tend to go off-trail frequently, so I am skeptical about how they will perform for heavy hiking and casual climbing on rocks.
I like these hiking boots well enough to try anohter size and and am hoping that a full size larger allows them fit as comfortably as the previous reviewer reports them to be.

These boots are top notch, the most comfortable boots I have ever worn. The inner sole of the boots are made by Vibram and they are extremely comfortable. The stitching is solid. The outer soles are very thick with great grip on the bottoms. The strings are thick and high quality.

The only annoying thing about them is that the top 2 notches for the strings are the little arms that you have to wrap nudge the string through every time you put them on but I suppose that's typical of most boots and it's not that big of a deal. That's just the only thing I don't like about them so I wanted to add that to the review.

Wearing these almost feels like sneakers--that's how comfortable they are. The first time I wore them, my sister-in-law said, "Wow, those are really nice boots. I bet they were $180 or $200." And I said, "Nope, they were about $100 on Amazon." Trust me, my sis-in-law is no big fan of mine so for her to say that she had to have been very impressed by them. I like these so much I bought 2 colors, grey and red, and I may buy a black pair.

I bought these for the Midwest winters. Even if it doesn't snow a lot like the past few winters, it still gets cold enough that there is plenty of ice on the sidewalks and in the alley that I use to walk to work in the morning. Last year I fell several times on the ice and that's why I bought these and I'm expecting them to hold up for years to come--the quality is that good.

I recommend buying some water-proofer and spraying them as soon as you get them. I covered mine with 2 coats of it since I'm expecting to use them in the snow. Also, I have a dozen pairs of New Balance sneakers and casual shoes and I wear a 10.5 D in every pair. However, with these boots I recommend buying a size smaller than your typical New Balance shoes because they are made big like most boots are. The 9.5 D fits perfectly while still allowing wiggle room for my toes.

I highly, I highly recommend these. Very high quality. Perfect for winter or outdoor activities. A+ from me.

I have several pair of NB athletic shoes and boots and thought that these would be a perfect winter boot. I ordered my usual 11 EEEE and as soon as I took these boots out of the box I knew I was in trouble. I have high arches and the gusseted tongue on these boots made it nearly impossible for me to get my foot in and when I did the width was no where near a 4E width. I even tried these on with no socks and I had a hard time. Either the boots were mislabled or they are sized completely wrong. It's really a shame because I really liked the design of the boot and was looking forward to wearing them.

First, the fit and comfort is exactly what I have experienced in the past from New Balance, very good. However this morning with the temperatures at 5 above zero, They felt like they had no insulation in them. Supposed to have 200 grams of Primaloft. My feet were cold even in my vehicle, and that was with a pair of heavy wool socks on. I think they missed it on that one. I've owned footwear with 200 grams of Thinsulate and those did a better job of insulation. I'll try again with a pair of liner socks under the wool and see how that works, and I don't have a circulation problem. Feet are normally very toasty.

The other problem was traction on ice. Ice that was dry surfaced and ice that had partial meltoff on it. I realize ice is very challenging even with good traction lug soles, but this pair had to have the assistance of strap on ice cleats to keep from busting the old back side. I have a pair of Herman Survivor 8 inch boots with lug soles and they grip very well. Overall they are very comfortable, and I'll keep them for general use, but will go shopping for a better winter pair.

i am a postie where i work in Canada so i need some warm boots that are durable and comfortable as i am walking the majority of the day. I use saucony runners in the summer months but had to switch to these new balances for the winter months. I have used this pair for 2 1/2months and they have completely broken down in the crease of the top of the boot. The boots themselves are warm and comfortable but by the end of my route my feet are completely soaking wet. I am very disappointed about this product as they are quite expensive and now i have to go replace them. I will provide a picture of the boots so that future buyers will be better informed.....

I normally wear New Balance Shoes exclusively since I have a 4eeee width. However the MX608 shoes always end up ripping out along the sides due to the width of my feet. When you put them on and put your weight on them you almost always see the trying to spread wider. With these 4eeee boots the width is perfect and you don't have the boot trying to spread out when you put weight on it to accommodate your foot. the only issue I have is that its a bit of a tight squeeze trying to get them on, however I guess once their broken in a little longer that will relax a bit. Otherwise I'm very happy with them.

Would have given 5 stars however, like many posts have described a "seam" in the ankle area digs into my skin. Even through thick socks I can feel this ill-placed and stiff protrusion. Actually, kind of a deal breaker for me which I believe very off-putting seeing how this boot is probably the best designed (minus the annoying seam) and best constructed boot I've ever worn.

If New Balance were to fix this glaring issue (did they try them on and wear them around the office before it went into production?), I'd buy three pair - cuz we all know how N.B.likes to discontinue our favorite models.

Sizing was a small tad on the narrow side for a 4E (even with standard socks). Please, if you have even a semi-wide foot, order the 4E. I can't imagine how narrow the standard width would be.

The Vibram sole is top-notch. My feet are plenty warm without wearing thicker socks, so 5 stars on insulation. Five stars on construction, boot feels like it was made out of materials built for the water (read-waders for fishing). Five-ish stars on design (rubbing ankle seam). Boot is stiff but not overtly-so. Four and a half stars for sizing. My 10.5 4E felt closer to a EE but the 10.5 was right on!!

Well worth the money, just be prepared to put some makeshift padding on the ankle biter,

As you can see by the size of this shoe, it is a very hard size to find. I was so happy when I found these on Amazon. We are going on vacation and it is snowing there. Thanks Amazon, you are wonderful.

Great shoe however width was not what I need. I love NB however this particular shoe was not the 4E width that I have gotten in the past. Nice shoe otherwise.
