I've worn a pair of NB 977's for about two years and just replaced them with a pair of 978's. The 978 gets some things right like a more aggressive tread pattern and more durable leather over the toe. However, changes include:
1. The 978 seems overall more bulked up. Whereas the 977 feels like a cross-trainer that looks like a hiking boot, the 978 feels like a hiking boot. It may be too much for everyday wear.
2. The toe is much more pointed. If you are someone with wide feet who found the 977 to be a great fit, be aware that New Balance has completely changed that with the 978.
3/22/11-update: After trying to break them in for another month, the 978's haven't worked out for me for the above reasons. The 977's are the way to go!

I bought these boots in their previous incarnation about 2 1/2 years ago, and wore them
almost every other day. I love to walk, hike and work in them. About a year ago I bought
a new insole and they lasted me until now. I shopped for these shoes on line with LL Bean,
Cabelas, Bass and Amazon, which had the best price. LLBean recommended that one should
order NB shoes one-half size larger to get the proper fit (NB disputes that advice)- I did
that and I am completely satisfied - you will not be disappointed in choosing this product.

I have a closet full of New Balance and Dunham 4E shoes. After reading the reviews I ordered a pair of these a half size larger. They were still way too narrow. I'm not going to order them way too long just so they are wide enough. I looked at all the other similar boot options for New Balance/Duham and it sounds like they are having trouble with widths across the line.
New Balance is going to lose a lot of loyal wide foots if they can't get their sizing fixed!

Oh New Balance, why did you have to change a good shoe? My husband has wide, flat feet, and it is difficult to find shoes that fit that give him the comfort and support he needs. The New Balance 977 worked well for him, and we bought as many of them as we could - now they are getting impossible to find. When we ordered this shoe (the 978) we ordered same size & width that he wore in the 977, and the 978 was both too small and too narrow. Very disappointing!

These boots are truly excellent. They look sharp, with a lace system and upper design like any high quality hiking boot, but the sole is more contoured and less imposing looking then most hiking boots. The result is that you have something that looks and feels great with a pair of jeans in the yard or on the trail.
These have all the ankle support you would expect from a hiking boot, but all the comfort of a walking shoe. There is no break-in period at all. I wore them out of the box on an 11-mile hike on a punishing trail that was all stones and boulders covered by leaves. At first I worried about twisting my ankle because so many times my feet landed on uneven footing that I couldn't see, but the support of these boots was excellent, and I just plowed along.
I guess a drawback would be the sole: the traction pattern on the bottom isn't as aggressive or solid as what you'd find on a true hiking boot--but then, that's the point of these: they're hybrids. Nevertheless, after my 11-mile hike, my feet, while tired, were not in pain, nor were they sore the next day. By contrast, my hiking partner had heavy duty boots on and complained that the rocks were killing him.
Also, these are Gore-Tex. I crossed two streams by just splashing through, and these shoes practically quacked like ducks.
Last week, I wore these all day to a large warehouse store for three hours, riding my bike, and in a movie theater. They were as comfortable as any sneaker and did not cause fatigue, but I was aware that I had good solid, warm boots on.
Some people have commented on the sizing being a little off, and I will corroborate that. I normally wear a 9.5D for New Balance shoes. After reading the comments, I ordered a 10D. while it fits comfortably, I wish I'd gone with a 10.5D, as I think these are a full size off from normal New Balance sizing. Some people have also complained about the toe being too narrow. I did not find that to be an issue at all, but then my feet are normal width.
Lastly, I think the list price on these is a little steep, but if you're able to find them in the $80 range or below, these are excellent for trail, work, or leisure.

I have worn New Balance shoes and boots for over 20 years because of the availability of wide widths and consistency of sizing. I have two pair of the prior version of the MW978 boot, both in size 8.5US-4E. The new version, MW978, is significantly narrower than prior versions. It does not come close to the 4E widths of my old New Balance boots or my trail-running shoes. The length is correct, but the boots are much to narrow.

Great boot, very comfortable, looks great, made very well and sturdy. I wear it to work (I'm a contractor)and it holds up under everything I put it thru. I would recommend ordering the next size because it seems to run small, I'm a size 12 but it was too small, the 13 fits better.

I was somewhat disappointed with this New Balance shoe. First, the shoe runs shorter than a New Balance tennis shoe. The shoe is comfortable, but the first day I wore it the insole came loose. Now everytime I take the shoe off I have to straighten out the insole...a pain. Don't know how they will hold up as I have had them a short time, but they didn't start off well. Wish I had gone with the Merrell instead.

I previously had a pair same size purchased at the New Balance store in Lawrence MA. They fit fine and were made in China. This pair made in Vietnam hurt my big toe. Apparently this source did something wrong.

Saw many reviews about size and width being too small so I ordered one half size larger and they fit barely, I take two stars away because of the size issue. I dont get why NB allows these sizing issues to continue on ALL Chinese made shoes. As usual if you want to be sure of the size BUY AMERICAN, NB is allowing their product name to take a negative hit by outsourcing to China. We will see how these shoes do in the long run. Here is an update, I emailed NB customer service and they were very helpful in resolving the issue. I also purchase size 11.5 4E and they fit perfectly. So bottom line is if you want these shoes order 1 full size larger than your usual shoe size . On a positive note I have found the shoes to be very well made with lots of nice leather. Hopefully the stiching will hold up in the long run, but even if it does not I am confidant that NB customer service will help me to replace them, THEY ARE FANTASTIC, and I give their service ***** FIVE STARS
