I have been wearing New Balance athletic shoes for about 15 years, have owned probably 20 pairs in various models, and I have ALWAYS worn a 9.5 4E which has plenty of room for my feet. I can fit in a 2E but I prefer the roomy fit. I ordered these in a 9.5 4E and found that they have a very narrow toe box. even tighter than the 2E width in most New Balance models. These are more like a 9.5 D. Have worn them three times so far hoping to break them in. They still hurt my feet.

That said, the construction is sturdy and they LOOK great, but the sizing is wrong.

I've worn mostly New Balance cross trainers for the past several years. This most recent pair was tighter than my previous pair of the same size and was not comfortable to wear or walk in; didn't feel much cushioning at all. It seems as though the quality of New Balance shoes has been deteriorating recently. I opened a brand new box of Asics Gel cross trainers that I ordered a few days ago and put them on; it was like night and day. The Asics cross trainers were super comfortable and had very good cushioning while walking or jogging. I will be switching to Asics shoes, which is too bad because NB used to have good quality shoes.

This shoe is nothing fancy, and has a similar look and shape to most other New Balance sneakers. The inside is a little narrow, as other reviewers have mentioned, but I found that it broke in quickly and comfortably. The stitching on the shoe is no more or less sloppy than I've come to expect from sneaker manufacturers these days. The last New Balance shoe I purchased lasted well over a year with regular use, and from the look and feel of this shoe, I expect it to last at least that long before beginning to come apart.

These shoes seem to be of typical NB quality. However, the fit is to narrow. I have been buying NB shoes with EE width as long as I can remember. It's the only brand of sneakers I wear. I found these shoes to be painfully narrow, fitting more like a D width than EE. I sent them back but still plan to buy a new pair of NB just not this model. As much as I like to shop online, I think I need try before I buy next time.

These shoes are the right ones for anyone with wide feet. They are wide and fit nicely. Amazon was able to get them to me quickly so that I had another pair that I desperately needed.

Purchased this and the MX623. This shoe ran tight and was uncomfortable. Sole felt weak. I think the MX623 is a better shoe and rated that one 4 stars.

I have been wearing 409 New Balance for 6 years and always purchased from a Brick and Motar Reputable Nationwide Chain .
I am recanting my story and I am highly embarrased that I made a accusation that Amazon sent me Imitation New Balance Sneakers. I just went to Kohls dept store and found that the sneaker construction is the same as the one's I ordered from Amazon .
It appears that New Balance is making their shoes with less quality then they use too.

very comfortable. I have Plantar fasciitis, at least i think I do. Heck who knows. My foot has ached for over a year now but it aches less when I wear these. Good deal for the price. I'm actually looking for another pair to wear in the house and keep these for outdoor use.
I bought mine, Indonesian made, at Kohls for around $45

Normally I get these at a discount sporting goods store for quite a bit less but my old pair developed a hole and the store didn't have my size. New Balance used to be known for having very wide toe boxes - the company says you should be able to wiggle your toes freely inside.

This is an SL-2 (shoe last) which will mean a narrower fit. If you have wide feet you should learn more about NB lasts and possibly try a NB shoe with an SL-1 which is wider in the toe box. I used to wear a 9 1/2 D in almost every men's shoe they made. (I gave up trying to find women's shoes that fit me a long time ago and not everyone wants to wear pink!) Anyway... I now wear a 10 2E in most NB shoes which is ridiculous.

They arrived today and compared to the quality of my old 409's side by side you can see some minor but noticeable differences in manufacturing. What other reviewers are saying is true. Also, if you have thin gel sole inserts you could probably try those as you get a lot more toe room by removing the inserts that come with the shoes. Mine buckle a bit and do not seem to properly fit. Also not great is the serious lack of tread on these which is rather important. Save your money and switch shoe brands or buy these cheap. I really only bought them because they had my size and a return wouldn't likely be an issue.

UPDATE: Have worn these twice since purchasing and the seam keeping the ankle support foam intact inside has come away from the shoe. The cushioning is sliding out of the ankle support! What a waste of money!

I finally was forced to replace my favorite 608 New Balance shoes. I wear size US 11 2E with orthopedic inserts. On my 608's (and I have owned multiple pairs through out the years) I never removed the standard inserts that come with the shoes.

Review:
When the shoes arrived they came in the standard New Balance shoe box. They arrived exactly as described. I ordered the same size I have ordered for years and used the same orthopedic inserts I used in my last pair of 608 New Balance shoes. When I tried these on I noticed that they seem considerable tighter (around the foot on the sides of the shoe) than my last 608's. As I wear them they seem to have stretched some but still seem tighter than what I am used to.

Besides the tightness they fit well. They seem lighter than my 608's and don't seem to go up as high on the foot. Keep in mind this is after a couple of weeks of wearing them so it they might stretch and settle more.

My kids thought they were very cool.

Pros:
-Look cool (as mentioned by my kids)
-Fairly light shoe
-New Balance fit (offering shoes for wider feet)

Cons:
-Seem to fit tighter than the 608 2E's **Might be just because they are new**
-They seem to be lower than the 608's
