5.0 out of 5 stars Designed for playing tennis -- excellent durability

3.0 out of 5 stars mehhhh.............
I was looking for a lightweight WHITE shoe for light workouts at the local Y, these were "clunky" I couldn't move as smoothly as I normally did, it felt like the toe area would hit the floor on the sides when doing aerobic group workouts, slipping me up. True to size, just not good for my purpose!

This review is from: New Balance Women's WC655 Tennis Shoe (Apparel)
The New Balance WC655 is not a generic "tennis shoe" but rather athletic footwear designed specifically for the needs of a tennis player. The shoe has great stability support to minimize rolling your ankles when changing directions quick from side to side, and it has a slight forward angle to keep players on their toes. The toe box in most New Balance tennis shoes is wide, and this model is no exception. You can buy a medium-width size, have it correctly keep your foot in place at the ankle and arch, but still have some wiggle room in the toe area. (New Balance is known for offering tennis shoes in a variety of widths, making them popular for a range of foot shapes/sizes.) The shoe is a little heavier than some brands, although still light.

For me, the original selling point of New Balance tennis shoes was the sole. I managed to wear through the toe soles of a K-Swiss pair in a month. Wilson and Prince lasted only two-three months. The New Balance soles for about six months or more. Because I play mostly on hard surface courts, I'm really tough on my shoes, and this brand is one of the few that seems worth the expense.

I have started buying my New Balance shoes a half-size larger than I normally wear to preserve my toe nails. Because I haven't broken or lost a toe nail since I've done this, I suspect these run a little small. The half-size smaller was equally comfortable, but I did jam my toenails against the sneaker during sudden stops.

I highly recommend New Balance. This particular model falls in the middle of the NB tennis shoes for women. The 300-level line has less ankle support, with a lower cut on the sides. The 800-level ones have greater stability, but also more height.

I got a pair of these shoes several weeks ago in D width. As soon as I put them on, I knew I'd finally found the tennis shoe I'd been wanting and needing. No more blisters on my pinky toes, and I'm able to lace them up to get a snug fit without being too tight. For those of us who have wide feet and are looking for a real tennis shoe, this is a great buy! And quite a bit cheaper than other places, too!

Normally I don't like to buy shoes online because I like to try them on first but I couldn't find any size 5 tennis shoes in my local stores so, in desperation, I turned to the web. Not only did my shoes fit like a dream, they are good-looking and sturdy. I notice that the soles fan out a bit at the ball of my foot in order to give extra stability and grip for quick side maneuvers on the court.

New Balance tennis shoes have a really good arch support, and a wide toe box for moveability on the court.

4.0 out of 5 stars so far so good, November 17, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Like I said, so far so good. Only been playing on them for a few weeks so its hard to make a firm decision on them yet. But they give good support and traction on a hard outdoor surface, haven't used them indoors yet. The sizing is a bit off tho, I got my size which is 8 but it seems to run long in the toe. ANd the medium width seems to run on the wide side, lots of room for my flat feet. So that was good. Not too flattering for them tho, makes my feet look bigger than they are, but didn't get them for their looks. Good shoe for a good price is my final answer.
